Goldberg Set to Host Academy Awards

Whoopi Goldberg ("Guinan") is set to host this year's 74th Annual Academy Awards. This marks Goldberg's fourth appearance as the host, having served as host for the 66th, 68th and 71st Oscar ceremonies. "Whoopi has great warmth, wit, humor, humanity and a social conscience - all qualities that I feel are essential for this year's show," said Laura Ziskin, producer of the Oscar telecast. "She is both an Oscar winner herself and an Oscar tradition, this being her fourth stint as host over the last 10 years."

Goldberg will host this year's ceremonies on March 24, and is the first host of the show as it settles into its new home at the new Kodak Theater at the Hollywood & Highland complex.

Robert Wise Lands a "Milestone"

The Producers Guild of America will be bestowing its highest honor, the Milestone Award, on legendary producer, director and editor Robert Wise. The director of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" as well as many other classic films such as "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music" will be receiving the Guild's Milestone Award, recognizing Wise's lifetime of achievements.

"Being recognized by my peers at the Producers Guild of America is a tremendous honor," said Wise. 'I am thrilled to join such an elite group of past Milestone Award winners and am thankful to the industry that has provided me such wonderful opportunities." Over the years, Wise has racked up an incredible 67 Oscar nominations and 19 wins, starting with his first for editing "Citizen Kane." The award will be presented to Wise at a ceremony to take place on March 3 in Century City, California.

Fuller to Pen New "Carrie" for NBC

Star Trek: Voyager writer Bryan Fuller has been attached to write a television version of Stephen King's "Carrie." NBC has ordered the new project with an eye towards either a weekly series or a series of television movies based on the King classic about a troubled high school teen possessing incredible powers. The new, modern-day version will be supervised by MGM-TV's Hank Cohen.

Star Trek at the Grammys

This year's pack of Grammy nominations included two for a pair of Star Trek alums. Acclaimed songwriter Diane Warren is nominated in the category of "Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media" not for her Enterprise theme song "Faith of the Heart," but for "There'll Be You," a track from "Pearl Harbor."

In the category of "Hard Rock Performance," the band Rage Against the Machine, (with bandmate Tom Morello who appeared in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Good Shepherd") is nominated for "Renegades of Funk."
