Dispatch: Bakula Up for People's Choice Award

After only nine episodes of Enterprise, Scott Bakula (Captain Archer) has already re-established himself as one of the most popular actors on television. He is one of the top three contenders for a People's Choice Award in the category of "Male Performer in a New Series."

The nominations for the 28th annual People's Choice Awards were announced Tuesday in Beverly Hills. Winners will be presented during a CBS special on January 13 taking place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Competing with Bakula is Star Trek: Voyager veteran Jason Alexander, who played Kurros in "Think Tank." Alexander was nominated for his title role in ABC's Bob Patterson, despite the fact that the sitcom was recently cancelled.

And an awards nomination story wouldn't be complete without a mention of Kelsey Grammer, who is contending in the regular "Male TV Performer" category. The Frasier star can be counted as a Star Trek veteran because of his cameo appearance in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Cause and Effect" as Captain Morgan Bateson.

The People's Choice Awards are voted on in a nationwide poll conducted by the Gallup organization, using a representative sampling of more than 214 million Americans who select their favorites in most categories.

Bakula is no stranger to the awards scene. From 1990 to 1993, he was nominated each year for an Emmy Award as "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series" for his lead role in Quantum Leap. During that period he was also nominated three times for a Golden Globe, and took home that trophy in 1992.
