Convention Report: Grand Slam Overview

Star Trek's fans from all over the world converged on Pasadena over the weekend, joining their favorite Star Trek celebrities for Creation Entertainment's 9th Annual Grand Slam Convention. There were also a number of other Star Trek events over the weekend, and while in-depth reports on each of them will be coming soon, here's a quick recap of the busy proceedings.

The Grand Slam convention traditionally boasts one of the most complete rosters of guest appearances from the world of Star Trek, and this year kept that tradition. The entire surviving cast of the Original Series was there, but the gap left by the late DeForest Kelley ("Dr. McCoy") was filled by a tribute of the beloved doctor with video clips representing his entire acting career. Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation found it was a good day to see Michael Dorn ("Worf"), Marina Sirtis ("Deanna Troi"), Wil Wheaton ("Wesley Crusher") and others. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine aficionados got to see Odo (Rene Auberjonois) and Quark (Armin Shimerman) perform readings together on stage, and Star Trek: Voyager fans were in stitches watching the antics of their favorite space travelers.

The two appearances that filled the huge convention hall to capacity were William Shatner ("James T. Kirk") and Ricardo Montalban ("Khan"). This was Montalban's first appearance at a Star Trek convention. Another dignitary gracing the stage for the first time was Robert Wise, director of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," who was there to promote the film's upcoming DVD release and talk about his legendary body of work.

Two special events requiring additional tickets were Friday night's presentation from Leonard Nimoy ("Spock") and John de Lancie ("Q"), performing their popular "Spock Versus Q" program, and on Saturday night, fans got to see some of Star Trek's finest display their musical talents at the Cabaret. While it's no surprise that Cabaret performers James Darren (DS9's Holosinger Vic Fontaine) and Tim Russ (Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager) can belt out a tune, fans got to enjoy songs, dance and comedy from Auberjonois, Chase Masterson (Leeta on DS9), Scarlett Pomers (Naomi Wildman on Voyager), Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris on Voyager), hosted by Robert Picardo (The Doctor), who also joined in with some of his famous Star Trek parodies.

A number of extracurricular events took place concurrently with the convention to allow fans to celebrate their favorite shows and actors in closer quarters. Also on Friday night in the nearby community of Monrovia, several DS9 cast members sat down for dinner with fan club members and other devotees. Auberjonois, Masterson, Shimerman and his wife Kitty Swink (who guest-starred in the DS9 episode "Sanctuary"), Andrew J. Robinson ("Garak"), Max Grodenchik ("Rom"), William Sadler ("Sloan") and Aron Eisenberg ("Nog") were on hand to support the fan clubs' charities and to discuss what they're currently up to.

Sunday morning most of the cast of Voyager boarded a yacht with more than 150 fans for a three-hour tour in Marina del Rey. Voyager stars Kate Mulgrew ("Kathryn Janeway"), Robert Beltran ("Chakotay"), Roxann Dawson ("B'Elanna Torres"), Garrett Wang ("Harry Kim") and the aforementioned McNeill, Picardo, and Russ mingled with the fans, had brunch, answered questions and engaged in lots of silliness as they talked about their seven years together. They also auctioned off a number of autographed items, including a Captain Proton poster, a couple of props from the show (a hypospray and a PADD), and a tour of the Voyager set during its final week of filming. Sponsored by McNeill's and Picardo's fan clubs, this benefit cruise raised more than $23,000 for charity.

STARTREK.COM will be posting more in-depth coverage of the convention and all of the excitement of last weekend daily throughout the coming week, with more detailed coverage plus many more photos of fans and Star Trek personalities.
