Scott Bakula Sings!

For Star Trek: Enterprise fans who only know Scott Bakula as action hero Captain Jonathan Archer, his performance on stage last Friday would certainly have been an eye opener.

Probably very few school fund-raising events feature performances by Tony-nominated Broadway stars, making this event a rare treat indeed. Scott Bakula and his wife Chelsea Field took the stage in "I Do! I Do!" supporting the Friends of Musical Theatre at the prestigious Los Angeles-area Hamilton Academy.

With Scott as "Michael" and Chelsea as "Agnes," the duo put on the complete two-person show: 16 songs and nearly three hours of singing and dancing. The story, based on the Jan De Hartog play "The Fourposter," begins on a young couple's wedding night and spans the next 50 years. The original 1966 Broadway production starred Robert Preston and Mary Martin.

The pair sounded great together on duets like the title song and the popular hit "My Cup Runneth Over." Scott's singing and dancing ability shone in the infectuously romantic "I Love My Wife" and the high-energy song "The Father of the Bride" (which features the comic line, "My daughter is marrying an idiot!"). The high-kicking in "Flaming Agnes" showcased Chelsea's considerable dance prowess (she was a Solid Gold dancer). The duo's argumentative banter in the show-stopping "Nobody's Perfect" number prompted several roars from the appreciative crowd.

The couple's connection to the school was made apparent during the song "When the Kids Get Married" in which both play musical instruments. After Scott managed to bleat out a few notes on the saxophone, Chelsea looked at him and proclaimed, "Obviously you did not go to the Hamilton Academy ..."

Scott shot back, "No, but my daughter did!" (Daughter Chelsy recently graduated; son Cody may be next to attend.)

Several of the front VIP rows of the capacious auditorium were filled with Scott's avid fans, many of whom had attended one or more of the couple's three previous benefits for the school. Fans had come from as far away as England, Austria and Germany just for this appearance. Event organizers lauded the fans for their generous support of the school over the years.

After the curtain call the parents and other school supporters departed, but about 100 fans lingered in the auditorium, patiently hoping for a glimpse of the star. A short while later Scott's publicist Jay Schwartz arrived (with his dog J.D.) just in time for Scott and Chelsea to emerge from backstage.

Scott then answered questions from the appreciative crowd (with frequent heckling from Jay), followed by Jay's suggestion that those who wanted autographs should line up. For the next two hours, Bakula patiently met with every fan who remained, signing items that they'd brought, posing for photos (which Jay dutifully snapped), and giving each a special moment with their favorite star. Even after a physically exhausting three-hour song-and-dance performance, Scott graciously took the time for every one of his fans in attendance, staying into the wee hours of the morning.

One devoted fan, Melanie "Stormymouse" Meins, came from Bonn, Germany with her friends Katrin "Quantumgirl" Regner and Yvonne "Sam80853" Bohlig just for this event. Sporting two Enterprise tattoos (see photo gallery at left), Melanie has been a fan of Scott's since 1992, and said, "The evening with Scott was worth every single one of the 10,000 kilometers I had to travel for it. I'd definitely do it again!"
