Trek Fans Encouraged to Support Writers Strike

As the Writers Guild of America strike goes on, "Trek Day" has been declared by the WGA for Monday, December 10, to picket outside the main Melrose gate at Paramount Pictures — and supportive Star Trek fans are being asked to take part as well as writers, directors, crew and actors from any incarnation of Gene Roddenberry's world from the past 42 years.

In line with the rest of the studios and production facilities around town, picketing begins at 5:30 a.m. daily as usual. A 10:00 a.m. window is being set as a special start time for Trek fans to show their numbers — and faces.

Adding to the mood, Vaughn Armstong ("Admiral Forrest") and Casey Biggs' ("Damar") "Enterprise Blues Band" will be playing for the picket lines and supporters. Writers from the large Trek family are being invited to make Paramount their destination for strike activities that day.

The current "Star Trek" movie under director J.J. Abrams is not affected by the strike and is currently shooting, but his Bad Robot production team and their other projects, as well as Star Trek's past scribes and their current work, are very much involved around the Hollywood strike sites. From the past Star Trek family, that includes most notably Ron D. Moore and the Battlestar Galactica team, will serve time mostly at the Universal lot. Joss Whedon's "Mutant Enemy" company, with Buffy/Angel and Firefly fandoms, have a similar strike theme set for Dec. 7 at the Fox picket line in Culver City.

Other Trek writers who have been actively supportive of the WGA position during this strike include "Star Trek XI" scripters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, along with John Logan ("Star Trek Nemesis"), Harlan Ellison ("The City on the Edge of Forever"), Michael Sussman, Andre Bormanis and many others.

A cross-genre website, fans4writers.com, now offers networking for fans of any show to coordinate, communicate, and offer support via auctions, picketing or many other means. Without the immediacy of a series in production, the site's Star Trek board has been slow to organize — so there's plenty of room to play. No other franchise in Hollywood has 700-plus hours of film and episodes in the can, or as veteran and savvy a fanbase.

Fans turning out should remember the strike is all outside the Paramount gate at 5555 Melrose Avenue, with no on-lot access, and parking can be limited but should be available in neighborhoods south of Melrose.
