Radio beacons aboard Federation starships used to send automated warnings to other vessels in the event that the ship was contaminated in some hazardous fashion. The transmitter on the U.S.S. Lantree was enabled after the starship crew was killed by antibodies from the Darwin Genetic Research Station.
