Five
is the magic number. In a move certain to ignite the fires of gamers everywhere, Bethesda Softworks announced today that all five actors who portrayed the
Star Trek series captains —
William Shatner ("
Kirk"),
Patrick Stewart ("
Picard"),
Scott Bakula ("
Archer"),
Avery Brooks ("
Sisko") and
Kate Mulgrew ("
Janeway") — will provide voiceovers in the new "Star Trek: Legacy" video game. This collaboration marks the first time the five actors have participated on a single
Star Trek project together. (All five have never even attended a
Star Trek convention together! At least not yet.)
"I am delighted to have the chance to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Trek with my fellow captains by providing our voices to 'Star Trek: Legacy'," said Shatner. "Bethesda Softworks has done an excellent job in creating an exciting game that stays true to Star Trek's roots and accurately incorporates elements from each series."
"We are absolutely thrilled to have the five actors who portrayed the Star Trek captains take part in this project,? said Todd Vaughn, vice president of development, Bethesda Softworks. "Their participation, especially since it takes place during the series' 40th anniversary, will add to the fun and excitement of the game and emphasizes our commitment to provide fans with the most authentic Star Trek experience possible."
"Star Trek: Legacy" places you in the role of the Admiral of a task force of warships, which you control in small and large-scale battles. Test your strategic and tactical skills in real-time combat featuring over 60 authentic spaceships, full damage modeling, and spectacular visual effects. Play through the single-player campaign or in the extensive multiplayer mode with a group of friends online.
The compelling storyline in "Legacy" spans the entire Star Trek universe and features a familiar name attached to its creative development: writer Dorothy "D.C.? Fontana. Bethesda recently announced that Fontana, along with her partner Derek Chester, have collaborated on the scripts for both "Star Trek: Legacy" and "Star Trek: Tactical Assault." Fontana, of course, was a prominent creative force behind the Original Series since its inception in the 1960s.
"We are thrilled to have one of Star Trek's most prolific and distinguished writers on our project team," said Vaughn. "Fontana's involvement underscores our commitment to remain true to the Star Trek vision and provide fans with the exceptional, original and accurate Star Trek games that they deserve."
Fontana has written countless episodes, spanning the Original Series to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In addition to her collaboration on Star Trek, Fontana has influenced television science fiction writing with her work on The Six Million Dollar Man, Babylon 5, and Earth: Final Conflict. In 2001, she was inducted into the American Screenwriters Association Hall of Fame and in both 1997 and 2002, received the Writers Guild Morgan Cox Award for her many years of service to the Guild.
"From TV to videogames, the Star Trek story continues to excite and engage fans of all ages," said Fontana. "I applaud Bethesda Softworks' loyalty to the franchise and I am looking forward to providing fans with memorable adventures and characters, all set in creative, compelling storylines."
"Star Trek: Legacy" will be available on both the Xbox 360 entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC. The title is scheduled to launch this fall under license from CBS Consumer Products. It has not yet been rated by the ESRB. For more information, visit the official Web site at: startrek.bethsoft.com.
