Following on from last year's high-profile DVD release of
Star Trek: The Animated Series, STARTREK.COM — with huge contributions from
Star Trek authors Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin — has been hard at work integrating show information within the Web site. Often viewed as the poor relation in the
Star Trek canon,
The Animated Series — for the sake of argument — certainly has its own place within the Trek-sphere. Sure, there are some points of reference that come up within the show that are hard to square with the standard approach to canon (i.e. whatever appears on screen being the most reliable way to track
Star Trek's historical points). But if you apply that standard equally, you have lots of plot holes and historical gaps to fill as well in the live-action series and movies. (Early TOS references to the "United Earth Space Probe Agency," anyone? Or, "
Spock's Brain"?)
The Animated Series has been part of our conciousness since its television debut in 1973, along with subsequent VHS and Laserdisc releases. But until its DVD release in November 2006, you probably haven't really seen it. For example, check out the comparison gallery to the left: One image is from the Laserdisc, and the other from the remastered DVDs. You will be amazed!
With the recent attention afforded the Animated Series, we only felt it was fair to give it some equal weight here on the site. For the first time ever, we have upgraded our coverage of the show and given it a virtual refit. We now feature full library coverage with new entries for Aliens, Places, Characters, Science & Technology, Medicine and more, plus all-new character bios (including one you may never have suspected), hundreds of new images, a new "Making of" Behind Star Trek Feature, a new documentary essay that covers this final year of the five-year mission, along with anything else we've done covering the making of this classic. Also be on the lookout for more daily content such as Trivia, Photos, Clips, Words and Quotes. Ladies and gentlemen, we now present to you ... The Animated Series!
