It would be difficult to imagine a
Star Trek universe without the many characters
Jeffrey Combs has brought to life, including his most recent role as
Shran, the cantankerous
Andorian commander who maintains a prickly but respectful relationship with
Captain Jonathan Archer on
Star Trek: Enterprise.
Prior to Enterprise, Combs played a conniving Vorta named Weyoun on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as the Ferengi bean counter Brunt. In one history-making episode, Combs played both Weyoun and Brunt in "The Dogs of War." Other Star Trek roles include Krem (another Ferengi) in the Enterprise episode "Acquisition," as well as two other aliens on DS9 and Star Trek: Voyager. And, in the Little Known Trivia Department, Combs was in the running to play Commander William Riker when Star Trek: The Next Generation was first cast.
The acting skills of Mr. Combs are certainly remarkable. If you look at his two DS9 characters, Brunt and Weyoun, you see two creations so dissimilar that it's hard to imagine they were played by the same person. That his feisty and blue Andorian varies so much from those two characters is again a tribute to the versatility of Jeffrey Combs.
Playing several major roles in the franchise is enough to win an actor a legion of fans, but Combs has done so much more. Even with this impressive body of Star Trek work, he is probably best known for starring in the H.P. Lovecraft cult classics "Re-Animator," "Bride of Re-Animator" and "From Beyond."
In this video interview, exclusive to STARTREK.COM, Jeffrey Combs talks about how he started his career, his favorite Star Trek episodes, and what it's like to act with moving antennae on his head.
