What is your character, Ensign Travis Mayweather, like? I'm the helmsman, I get to fly the ship! It's great! I always have to start there, because as a kid I think everybody had a dream at one point or another of going into space. And so I get to do it without ever leaving the ground. That's the best part about this. Travis is a space-boomer, was raised on cargo ships, so he has more knowledge, more space expertise than a lot of the members, even the captain, because, like I said, his parents were cargo people and worked on freighters. Everything that I'm telling you, all of this comes from Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. They know much more about Travis. But it's great that they've given me some parameters to work within and now I get to just bring myself to it and to that Star Trek universe.
What is the premise of the show?
The beginning! That's the premise. You get to see it start. You get to see the first transport, you get to see the first phase pistol. I talk a lot, so I'm not going to tell you a lot because I would be the one going "Oh, man! You're going to get to see this, and I can't wait!? But I'm not going to do that because that's what I keep doing, and they want to keep it a secret.
What do you hope fans will get from the show?
We are the people. And for me, that's what I hope people will get from this show more than anything. You're watching all these people work really well together. They're overcoming obstacles, because that's all we do in life every single day. Unfortunately you can't do it all by yourself. You have to have people around there to help you get through it all.
