What relationships will be focused on this season?

A lot of the relationships are being developed as what the producers may see happening between the actors and or what chemistry might be there, what roles we fit into with each other. I definitely would like to explore the relationships with the other cast members that I haven't had so many scenes with, especially the Vulcan. I think being the only other female that it is very important to establish relationships there and see how even though she is a Vulcan, she is female.

Who does your character interact with the most?

So far most of my scenes have been with the Captain. He comes to get me from the Amazon University where I am teaching and often times he takes me aside and convinces me that I am on the ship for a reason,  [like] when I get scared and when I'm wanting to leave and don't feel I belong. So there is definitely, I really look up to him and in a lot of respects he looks out for me and takes care.

What is your character, Ensign Hoshi Sato like?

Well, her role is Communications Officer, she deals with translating alien languages, and she has a genius gift for it. She's in one episode that she learns an alien language she's never heard before in basically a day. She still falters, but she's aware of syntax, the way that the language grammatically works, and vocabulary. She's the youngest of the crew, not only in age but also in temperament. She's kind of spontaneous, she's very human, very passionate about what she does, she loves it and that kind of conflicts against her fear of being out in space and not liking being chased by aliens and getting hit by phasers and whatever. She is very fearful of that, but she is on the ship for her intellect, really.

As an Asian-American, how does your character reflect your heritage?

No matter what I do, I make a statement on the Asian-American community as a performer and I gladly take that responsibility. I don't want it to be the total sum of who I am as an actor and take a political stand on every thing that I do, but I think the more and more audiences become familiar with seeing Asian faces on the television screen, the farther we can progress and everything has to be taken in steps.
