During her amazing career, Dorothy C. Fontana — usually credited as D.C. Fontana — has written for dozens of great television series including
Bonanza, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Streets of San Francisco, Dallas and
Babylon 5. She is best known to
Star Trek fans for writing classic original series episodes, including "
The Way to Eden," "
Friday's Child" and "
Journey to Babel," and for co-writing the pilot of
Star Trek: The Next Generation with
Gene Roddenberry. Fontana wrote three more episodes for ST:TNG and later penned "
Dax," an episode from the first season of
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
In 1973 D.C. Fontana served as the story editor and associate producer for the short lived but well remembered Star Trek: The Animated Series.
In 2003 Fontana paid a visit to the offices of STARTREK.COM for a wide ranging interview that covered her experiences writing and producing Star Trek over the years. In these excerpts, Fontana talks about the challenge of creating "Star Trek stories" for 22 minute episodes and the creative freedom that the animated show afforded. She also talks in detail about "Yesteryear," the Animated Series episode that she wrote.
