Production art is an important step in the development of the concepts described in the script of a motion picture. To visualize V'Ger for "
Star Trek: The Motion Picture", the filmmakers enlisted the aid of renowned NASA artist Robert T. McCall.
Once described by writer Isaac Asimov as "the nearest thing to an artist in residence from outer space," Robert T. McCall visually chronicled the American space program for over 35 years. His murals appear in the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, EPCOT, the Pentagon and the Johnson Space Center in Houston. In addition to these beautiful conceptual paintings he did for the first Star Trek feature, he has done work for other films such as "The Black Hole," "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and, of course, "2001: A Space Odyssey" for which he painted the movie poster.
