Jeri Ryan ("Seven of Nine" - VOY)

Question: When the part for Seven of Nine was casted were you the only one considered for the part or were there others ?
Mike

JR: I don't know how many others but I understand that it was a pretty large number of actresses who were up for the part.

Q: "7 of 9" has often referred to many things (including logic) as irrelevant... What, if anything, is relevant to her ?
Jason

JR: Efficiency.

Q: Jeri Ryan, is it true that we'll see you next year in Germany at the FED CON ?
Thomas

JR: I've been invited and I'm hoping to attend, yes.

Q: Is your character in Star Trek Voyager going to have more feelings and emotional response down the road ?
Grant

JR: Yes the long-term plan for the character is to have her become human eventually.

But hopefully that will continue to be gradual process.

Q: My wife and I love the new season of voyager, We are going to be at the Grand Slam April 4, and we would love to get our picture with you. Is that possible ?
andySalazar

JR: I will be there but I don't have any idea what the schedule is yet. I haven't been told whether there's a time set aside for fan pictures then absolutely. (But if there is then absolutely) - sorry (Jackie)

Q: Jeri, let me first say thank you for breathing new life into the franchise. You are truly an impressive addition. My question is, are there any specific directions you'd like to see your character go in, or any situations she might face ?
Garret

JR: Thank you very much. Everybody's been asking me that question lately. Including Brannon Braga. But the truth is, I really don't know. I have enjoyed the gradual discoveries that Seven's made over the coarse of the season so I think I'll leave it to the writers.

Q: Hi Jeri. I'm really glad to have this chance to chat with you since I missed your first chat [can you ever forgive me ;-) ]. My question is; What has been your favorite episode so far and do you look forward to the next season ? Your doing a FANTASTIC job on the show :-)
Alon

JR: I love the fact that your smileys have noses! Anyway...My favorite episode so far was "The Gift". Followed closely by "The Killing Game" and "The Raven". Oh, and "Prey".
Well, I'm a chick... I'm entitled to change my mind. :-)

Q: In your first episode of Dark Skies when your wiping the floor with the FBI agents and the main character Loengard [you go girl! ;-) ], was that all you in action or was it also a stunt double ?
Alon

JR: For my coverage, which means the shots that are on me, it was all me. For the other actor's close-ups, it was a stunt double.

Q: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now ? Are you concerned about becoming typecast as a Star Trek character ?
Barry

JR: Five years from now I'll be about 500 pounds since I'm on my fifth Reeses peanut butter cup since the chat began.

And yes, initially I was very concerned about being type-cast, although fortunately the mainstream media response that this character has gotten has pretty much allayed those fears.

Q: What was your favorite part about The Killing Game ?
NemoDream

JR: I got hair and lips and real clothes with no corset.

Q: Jeri, I sort of like having the same middle name as you, Teri Hatcher, and Jeff Goldblum, since you are all 3 major luminaries of screen sci-fi of the '90s. This is not really a question.
Jonathan

JR: You're right... it's not. But good name anyway.

Q: First, thank you for all the wonderful entertainment you have given to us. Do you have a fan club yet ?
And what are the chances of gitting an autographed photo ?
Dion

JR: Yes I do have a fan club. The website is; www.jerilynn.com. The chances of getting a photo are higher if you actually write to me. :) And actually you do get a much quicker response if you send a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Q: Do you thinking about making an album since you have a nice voice and how does it feel to sing in Star Trek ???
Mr. Shariff

JR: Well, it feels not unlike singing on "Dark Skies" actually. And no, I can think of nothing more painful to listen to than an album of myself singing. But thanks anyway.

Q: will you marry me so what if I'm only 14
toy

JR: Thank you very much. Unfortunately my husband has put a moratorium on additional husbands under the age of 25. But if it changes, I'll let you know.

Q: will we see real time images of her in the studio ?
Sonny Boy Blue

JR: Yes, they just took a picture and it should be up soon. (me with my Reeses.)

Q: You were Very Pleasant at the Visions'97 gathering last November here near Chicago. (Thanks!) Q1) Will you be back ?
Q2) Can you give Bill Shatner some pointers ? =')
Jesse

JR: Thank you very much, I had a great time. And on Bill's behalf, ouch!

Q: What is this deal about co-workers making you laugh so your borg eye-piece will fall off ?
Biocritical

JR: This goes back to the first episode of the season, "Scorpion Part II" when I was in the full Borg make-up. The laser over my left eye popped off if I smiled. So once my esteemed co-workers discovered this, they took it upon themselves to try and make me laugh at every opportunity.

Q: Jeri, do you view yourself as a role model for younger children watching the show ? I personally think you're doing a great job.
Chris

Host: (in little girl voice) "Yes, Mommy, I'm being a bitch because that's how Seven acts!"

JR: We're having a little too much fun here in this room.

Q: How has your life changed since you became part of Star Trek ?
Surel

JR: I'm doing a lot more interviews. And aliens contact me at night.

Q: Jeri, in the episode "Waking Moments", where you had to kiss Garrett, what did your husband think of this ?
SmorgasBorg

JR: My husband was really jealous. He thinks Garrett has great lips. JUST KIDDING! No, he's actually very cool about the whole "love scene thing". Much more cool than I would be.

Q: How much time does it take to do your makeup and "appliances" ?
CherylGrrl

JR: The make-up is a typical "beauty make-up" so it's about 45 minutes. Putting on the appliances only takes 15 minutes, if that. The hair, for some reason, is a major project. It takes well over an hour.

Q: Will Seven of Nine always wear the same outfit , or will she ever be allowed to wear the Starfleet uniform ?
Mike

JR: In the season finale I actually wore a different outfit. I had a workout outfit. Since Seven is not Starfleet, did not go to Starfleet Academy, she won't likely be in a Starfleet uniform. But this is Star Trek, so you never know. Things can change.

Q: I really liked your performance in Retrospect, along with the wonderful job you've done so far. My question is, what is going on with Janeway and Seven, we saw them developing some trust and even friendship in Day of Honor and a few other episodes, but they now seem to be on the rocks ? I think Janeway would make a great 'mother figure' for Seven, what are your thoughts ?
midnite_99

JR: That's a good question. Long, but good. :)
I think that early on in this season, the relationship between Seven and Janeway got a little too cozy too quickly and this was a concern for both Kate and myself. Because I think the conflict between these characters is what's so interesting to watch. So the writers/producers did a great job of bringing that conflict back with a vengeance. And where the relationship started to be sort of a mother/daughter one it's segued into a mother/rebellious teenager.

Q: Why did they make your heels so HUGE, I read that without heels your 5'8, and with your heels your 6'2, which makes your heels 6 inches high... Does this make your performance on the show uncomfortable ? And is this kind of height really necessary ?
Ed

JR: I actually wear stilts on the show. I'm really only 4'2". The 6'2" thing comes from USA Today. Several things were a little bit misquoted or blown out of proportion. My heels are actually 4" high which is, yes, pretty high come to think of it. And 5'8" is my correct height.

Q: Is that a purple Northwestern Univ. jacket we see you with today, Jeri ?
TR1SPY Brian

JR: Why yes, in fact it is. Go Cats! And Brian thank you so much for the birthday flowers! They were beautiful.

Q: Have you participated in any of the Star Trek Conventions yet ? If yes, where will you be next and when ?
Seffera

JR: Yes I've done three so far. The next one will be the Creation Grand Slam in Pasadena April 4th & 5th.

Q: Have you met any cast members from the other Star Trek incarnations ?
BenMorris

JR: Yeah. Obviously I know Terry Farrell from the TV Guide shoot. I've also met Jonathan Frakes and Michael Dorn, who I just adore. They're all great.
I also met Sid (Dr. Bashir) and Nana in Vegas. Sid and I actually did a convention together in Denver a few weeks ago.

Q: Will Seven's phaser aim ever improve ?
operations

JR: Who have I missed ?

Q: Would you like to have dinner at my house with some of your friends ? I promise you won't get bugged for autographs, it would mean a lot to me. Please.
Rolando

JR: Depends. Whatsya cookin' ?

Q: What is it like to play a role knowing that a lot of the stuff that will be there is not there at the time ?
Eric

JR: You mean it's not really there ? This isn't real ?
It's certainly more challenging but that's part of the fun of being an actor -being able to use our imaginations.

Q: Which cast member flubs their lines the most ? I LOVE YOU!
Creepy

JR: It's Robert Beltran. Although when they give me a lot of techno babble, believe me, I'm right up there with him. When the scripts come out if there are lengthy scenes between Robert and myself the entire crew begins to cancel any social engagements for the next week. 'Cause we'll be doing some long hours.

Q: You survived learning Russian and breaking your toe on Dark Skies. What have the challenges been on Voyager ?
stompy

JR: Techno-babble. That is without a doubt the most difficult dialogue I've ever had in my life. Well, okay, Russian was harder. The other big challenge is trying to keep a straight face in any scenes with Ethan Phillips, Bob Picardo or any of the boys.

Q: do you love your job ?
ace4jc

JR: Absolutely. What's not to love ? I get paid to hang out with my friends and play.

Q: Jeri if you could pick one person on the set of voyager to call your best friend at work. Who would it be ?
master311

JR: Oh yeah great! Get me in trouble. No, I'm afraid I have to be a diplomat. I love them all. (To be said with a grand gesture).

Q: What kind of adhesive do they use to apply the prosthetics to your face ?
Windstar

JR: Glue.

Q: Are you as hot in real life as in the show ?
C.J.

JR: Yep.

(we will attest to that)

JR: :)

Q: Who do you look up to ?
Rolando

JR: Anyone taller.

Q: How can you prove is really you ?
wanda

JR: Well how do I know it's really you, Wanda.

Q: When you play Seven do you have to get all psyched up for the part or do you just walk in and change your personality with the snap of a finger ? Do you ever get confused ?
Andrew

JR: What ? Wait, who are you ? Where am I ?! ? I'm so confused. Sorry, somebody just snapped their fingers.
Okay, sorry, I'll be good. It depends on the scene. If it's a very emotional scene then I do have to work up to it a little.

Q: How does it feel to play the character with the highest save Voyager to time spent on Voyager ratio ?
Marc

JR: Pretty darn good.

Q: You seem to really appreciate your fans and go out of your way to acknowledge us. On behalf of everyone, we say, "Thank you."
Repoman

JR: I absolutely do appreciate you guys. You guys are the reason that we have jobs. So thank you.

Q: I was at the StarFest 98 convention in Denver and waited 6 hours to get your autograph, and I would like to compliment you on being one of the sweetest people I've ever met and an exceptional singer too ;)
Michael

JR: WOW. Thanks for hangin' in there. :)

Q: If Chris Carter approached you to do an episode of the X-Files, would you take it ?
irin

JR: If it was a really good role. It just depends on the script.

Q: can you say something in Russian here..
ruso

JR: Nyet. Oh look, I lied in Russian.

Q: Do you still commute to Chicago on weekends or has your family relocated to LA ?
Matt

JR: Nope, we're still commuting.

Q: Do you know if "the last man" will be released ? If so when ?
Darkstar

JR: I don't know. The other independent film I did, "Men Cry Bullets" just won Best Film at the South by Southwest Film Festival, so hopefully that one will be distributed soon.

Q: Do you find it challenging to play a character who has so many emotional conflicts within, but is chronically aloof and reserved ?
Michael

JR: Yes, very challenging. That's the main difference between the character and myself. She's completely unemotional and I'm a rollercoaster.

Q: We love you on the show, here is a flower for you. @-}--
Kristina

JR: Oh, you're so sweet. Thank you.

Q: From listening to other actors speak at conventions, I believe a lot of practical jokes are played on the set. Have you been involved in any ?
Horatio

JR: There are a couple. In the episode "Year of Hell" when Tim Russ, Tuvok was blind, there was a scene where I was guiding him down the hallway. And of course since he's blind, he wouldn't see or be able to dodge certain debris hanging from the ceiling, or a wall.

Q: Do you have any siblings ? If so, what are their occupations ?
Melissa

JR: I have one brother who is a writer/tennis instructor.

Q: Just how does Jeri Lynn Ryan eat a Reeses peanut butter cup ?
Dr. Mindbender

JR: I assimilate it.

Q: Don't mind me, I'm not significant enough to respond to. Please ignore me.
NOT SIGNIFICANT

JR: 'kay.

Q: Who does your make up ? Michael Westmore ?
G_rald

JR: Tina Hoffman does my make-up now. And the original Borg and half Borg make-up was done by Scott Wheeler, who I also adore. I adore both of them.

Q: does someone have to have special access to get a question posted here ? ? ?
jim

JR: I'm told we have thousands and thousands of questions. So obviously we can't answer all of them.

Q: Have you been to the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas ?
GlennCsonka

JR: Yeah, I was there for the opening. It's pretty incredible.

Q: Would you like to see Seven soften a little as she becomes more human -- i.e., gentler and more empathetic ? Or is Seven more fun to play as she is now ?
Leonie

JR: I think inevitably she will soften somewhat. But she's definitely more fun to play when she's going nose-to-nose with somebody. Like she is now.

Q: Did you see the Movie Titanic ? If so what did you think of it ? ?
Jeri_Fan

JR: Haven't seen it yet. Doesn't it sink ?

Q: Here is more pringles (:<)>< ()
Pringles man

JR: I have two comments for you:

you are very artistic, and you have way too much time on your hands. :-)

Q: Do you have your own computer to surf "The Net" and see what the fans are writing about you or you rather wouldn't like know ?
Martin

JR: Yeah. I don't have a whole lot of time, but when I can I do try and at least check out some of the Web sites.

Q: Are you actually typing all this out, or are you getting someone else to type it out ?
Mun-HongGoon

JR: Someone else types it out. Jackie Edwards was typing, now Marc is typing.

JR: (I am Marc)

Q: Hi Jeri, YOU ROCK!!!! Keep up the good work. What is your all-time favorite movie ?
DP

JR: There are two of them. Sophie's Choice and Toy Story

Q: I was thinking about mailing a videotape of your Miss America appearance to Ethan Phillips. Do you think your costars would enjoy seeing that ?
Repoman

JR: Don't make me hurt you...

Q: Do you have any pets...if so who are they...and if you don't what kind would you like...if any ?
Fernando

JR: Growing up I always had tons of animals. Dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, chicks, ducklings, you name it. But we don't have any pets right now because of our commuter lifestyle. If we ever get in the same time zone permanently, then maybe we can. Actually I just hosted a special for UPN called "America's Greatest Pets". It should be on in about a month.

Q: What has been the most challenging episode for you yet ?
Nancy

JR: I think "The Gift" was the most challenging. Because I had to make the transition from full Borg to half Borg to whatever you call her now. Another one that was very challenging was "One" which hasn't aired yet. Because over the course of the episode, Seven sort of breaks down. Since we film out of sequence, keeping the arc of the progression was really tough.

Q: What is it like being part of the star trek phenomenon, and is it fun.
B.j.

JR: It's great fun. But I have to say it is sort of overwhelming. The day before I was supposed to test for the network, Rick Berman (exec producer) told me that I was stepping onto a freight train, and I had no idea how fast it was going until I was on it. That was incredibly accurate. It's been a great ride so far.

Q: is it true you ranked eigth in your class...do you think that the name 7 of 9 was predestined. (get it 7...8...9)
9 of 11

JR: Yes, and that's MY LINE from the LAST CHAT! :-)

Q: What city are you doing this chat from ?
BenMorris

JR: Hollywood.

Q: Do you see or know of any romantic development between Seven and Harry Kim ?
Sliver

JR: What are you talking about ? Who's Harry Kim ? Actually, any real romance right now would be pretty premature for Seven since she's basically still a child emotionally. And yes, I am the queen of alliteration.

Q: Has your husband had to beat up an intrusive fan yet ?
Bryanarchy

JR: No, but there's always a first time. :-)

Actually, he's just the opposite. In Las Vegas he was actually running interference for the fans. When the publicity people were rushing me to interviews, late as usual, Jack kept stopping me to point out fans I had missed for autographs or pictures

Q: Can you type fast ?
Mike

JR: No, but Marc and Jackie can.

Q: ah.... can you just say HI to me ? ? ?
The mushroom man

JR: Yeah, I guess I could. Oh, all right. Hi. :-)

Q: Are really this funny in real life, or are you just acting ?
Vincent

JR: She brought a team of writers with her. Jeri left a while ago - her team of writers is still here. :-)

Q: How much time is there between your first reading of the script and when the episode airs ?
ab

JR: It's a good couple of months.

Q: Jeri Ryan: Were you on an episode of Diagnosis Murder called "Murder by the Book" ?

JR: I don't recall the title of the episode I was on, but that must be it.

Q: que tal es participar de n futuro posible, aunque fictci por ahora ?
damj

JR: I'm sorry, I don't speak Klingon. Why don't you try Borg ?

Q: Who is the person who is the most influential person in your life ?
Troi59

JR: My Mom! She has always been my best friend and a terrific example for me to follow.

Q: You have become so popular on Voyager and yet you still answer your own fan mail. Where do you find the time ?
stompy

JR: Considering I just moved into a new house and four of the boxes were marked "Fan mail"

I think I'm a little bit behind! So, please be patient, I will get to all of your letters eventually.

Q: What was the hardest line you have had to say on Voyager so far ?
Jason

JR: I don't remember. I've blocked it out.

Q: Is there any chance that you might drop by in the UK since there are quite a number of your fans over here ? ?
Hafiz

JR: I would love to. I have only been to the UK once - London. But I absolutely loved it.
(we're having pizza)

Q: Hi honey, how are you doing ?
Jack Ryan

JR: You, sir, are an imposter.

Q: Jeri, how did you get into acting anyway ?
Bryanarchy

JR: It's what I always wanted to do. As long as I can remember. My first actual acting role was in the 4th grade play. Gracie at the Bat - and I was Gracie. And I did community theater all through junior high and high school and then majored in Theater at Northwestern. After I graduated I moved out to L.A. and seven years later I'm an overnight success! :-)

Q: Who is your favorite author ?
Briareos

JR: Charles Dickens.

Q: How difficult was it to keep a straight face in the scene with the "Dr." where Seven was learning courteous speech ?
Cynthia

JR: It was very tough. Bob is hysterical with all his "bits of action". Although it wasn't the hardest scene. The ones where we have to actually look at each other are worse.

Q: Is Ethan Philips (Neelix)taller than you are ? He doesn't look it.
Dale

JR: No he's not. Just cuter.

Q: Jeri, who do you get your good looks from. Bryan

JR: From the makeup trailer.

Q: Do you ever crave White Castle burgers ?
Dave

JR: No. I'm a McDonald's girl.

Q: Have you seen the Seven action figures and what do you think of them ?
Movies

JR: So far I've only seen the 12 inch statuette. It's pretty surreal.

Q: First of all, I think you are terrific. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication. One question: What was it like to work with Tori Spelling in that "made for TV" movie you guys did ?
Mick

JR: Thank you. Tori was great. I really wasn't sure what to expect. We had a great time together. She's very down to earth.

Q: Would Seven of Nineconsider a guest spot on The Simpson's ?
Briareos

JR: No, but I might.

Q: Do you know if chat transcripts will be available of this session ? Not answering this question irrellavent. Resistance is futile.
The computer

JR: Yes. On www.startrek.com

Q: Jeri, how do you maintain your most excellent figure ? The women in the office where I work love you in Voyager, but grumble and complain about when the guys mention your fitness . . .
Justin

JR: Well, thank you. I'm pretty lucky as far as having a reasonably fast metabolism. I can sort of eat what I want for three or four days, and then I need to watch it for about four or five. I try and cut down on the fat.

Q: What are you favorite TV shows other than Voyager ? ? ? what 'bout Simpsons ? ?:)
Warlock of Hell

JR: I don't get to watch TV. When I do get a chance, I like "Mad About You" and "Bill Nye, the Science Guy" which I watch with my son. :-)

Q: Hey Jeri Ryan! LOVE YOU! Can you give us any spoilers on upcoming episodes ? I understand if you cant, but I STILL LOVE YOU!
iwant2Bu

JR: I LOVE YOU BACK! The conflict between Seven and Janeway sort of comes to a head in the final episode. But, hey, I surf the net. You guys already know.

Q: Do you enjoy the popularity that you have ?
Nala

JR: Yes, it's been great. Nothing has reached a fever pitch where I get mobbed when I go to the grocery store. The people who recognize me are very courteous and very respectful.

Q: It's not Trek related, but I'm curious -- do you like "South Park", Jeri ?
Brian

JR: Never seen it.

Q: Jeri what were your first thoughts when you read the first script for Seven of Nine.
Major Dion

JR: Panic. The only Borg that I had seen were in First Contact. They had given me a tape to watch before I tested. The producers already told me to disregard the Borg Queen because she was a completely different animal. Seven of Nine was a drone. So since the Borg Queen was the only one who spoke, I assumed that I would just be walking around silently in the background for the first episode or two. And then I'd start talking and acting later.

And then I saw the first script and I was talking all over the place, as a Borg. Then Rick Berman explained to me that they wanted to create a whole new Borg. Not as "free" as the Borg Queen, but not an automaton drone either. So I really felt like I was floundering around for a while.

Q: Do you plan to direct an episode, since no female actor has yet ? Do you plan to do a convention down in Australia/New Zealand ?
helm boy

JR: No, I have no illusions about directing. I know where my talents are, and that ain't it.

If I'm invited, I'd certainly consider a trip Down Under.

Q: Do you have children and if so would you let them watch Mommy on T.V.
Rob

JR: I have a 3 1/2 year old son, and yeah, he does see me when the episodes aren't too intense.

Q: I understand that it must be a lot of work doing Voyager episodes, but can you describe what it was like when you were new to the set and first started filming ?
GeorgeEverett

JR: It was a little awkward since the cast had been together for three years already. And one of the original characters was being written out pretty much at the same time I was being added. But the cast was terrific, and very welcoming. As was the crew. Getting used to working with the Borg costume and makeup was a challenge.

Q: how is it working with Robert Picardo ?
eric

JR: It's great. He's hysterically funny.

Q: You've been called one of the sexiest women on television. How do you feel about that ?
Rochelle

JR: It's very flattering.

Q: Hiya Jeri! This is Jesse (From Chicago, the kid with the Revulsion script!). I'll be seeing you against at the Grand slam and I just wanted to tell you what an honor it was to meet you here in the windy city. I was just wondering, you said you don't watch much TV, but do you take the time to watch yourself on Voyager
Jesse

JR: Watching myself is a skill I've only recently acquired. Because I tend to be pretty neurotic and hypercritical. Unfortunately, on Wednesday nights I'm usually filming. And when the episodes re-air on Sunday, I'm generally on an airplane. But whenever I can, I try to catch it or watch it on tape.

Q: What does it feel like to have fans like this ?
Jonathan

JR: It feels great. You guys are amazing! Star Trek fans are very loyal and very warm.

Q: Do you belong to an organized religion of any kind ?
Judais

JR: Yes, I'm Catholic.

Q: I saw pictures of you dressed in a black dress with Kate and Roxanna, where are they from and is there a way for me to get a copy. Chris

JR: It was blue, actually. It was a publicity shoot at the beginning of the season. So I don't know where you can get a copy.

Q: Are you getting paid to chat with us, or is this a PR show ?
BBlaser

JR: I'm actually doing it out of fear because they'll beat me if I don't.

Q: How are your Reeses holding out ? Experienced a chocolate/pb high yet ?
Cyn

JR: Been there and crashed.

Q: When you were in school what were your best and worst subjects
Eric

JR: By school, I guess you mean high school/grade school ? Best subject was English and Geometry, because I like the logic of it. Worst was Math, Algebra especially.

Q: If I send a stamped, self-addressed limo can I get a date ?
Jim

JR: LOL

No, but you'll get points for creativity. And thanks for the car!

Q: How do you feel about Jeri Taylor leaving the show ?
Ben

JR: I'm really going to miss her. She's been so terrific to me this season.

Q: Which actors and actresses have been your role models for your own acting ?
Alon

JR: I love the subtlety of Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton and Anthony Hopkins is just incredible.

Q: what is one word that describes you ?
Brendan

JR: Tired. I don't think I'm going to make the record tonight.

Q: Is there anyway we can see footage of you cracking up in your Borg outfit ?
Ryan

JR: They are very protective of outtakes with Star Trek. Which is too bad, because there are some real doozies.

Q: Will you try to beat your 3 hr record ?
Seven of eleven

JR: The official timekeeper says the last chat was just over 3 hours. So we have officially set a new record. Thanks for sticking around. See ya!

Jeri, thank you very much for joining us here tonight. And thanks for this very exciting season on Star Trek: Voyager! Thank you all very much for participating in tonight's Special Event.

JR: Thanks Everyone!
