Robert O'Reilly plays "Gowron" on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." He originated this character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Robert O'Reilly: I was dragged in here kicking and screaming... but let's have some fun. Wahoo!
Question: Is there the possibility that Gowron might re-befriend Worf in the 7th season? Will you have any significant roles to play in this season?
Friend
ROR: I hope, but the actors are always the last ones to know. I would love to, especially in the last season. And I think it would be nice to tie up Gowron and a number of characters that have been throughout the two STs... Next Generation and Deep Space.
If you want to see my character again, write to Paramount, Deep Space Nine, 5555 Melrose, Los Angeles, CA 90038
Q: You have gorgeous eyes by the way. Will we see you on DS9 this season?
lilac
ROR: Thank you for the eye comment.
Q: Hello Robert. Did you enjoy the book of Irish fairy tales that we gave you in Newcastle, England a few years ago?
Judie & Paul
ROR: I did. And I'm still reading them and I'm waiting for my children to get old enough so that they understand the stories so that I can read it to them. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Q: Hi, what ST series did you like best working on and how did you like making the ST: Klingon CD-ROM?
Dax_Curzon
ROR: The Klingon series, that you haven't seen yet, is my favorite. Look for it in the new Millennium. The Klingon Honor Guard, CD ROM game is great. Wahoo.
But seriously, I have a special place in my heart for TNG and the first show where my character was introduced.
Q: how long does it take to get on your make up?
tea of the house latino
ROR: Four hours on and three days off. Especially the eye stuff. I still have some behind my ears and those bulging eyes are really tough.
Q: Will Gowron restore honor back to the House of Mogh, will he and Worf become friends again?
Marlon
ROR: We never were NOT friends. We just have different viewpoints about political questions. Klingons will be Klingons.
Q: nuqneH Gowron! It is an honor to have you with us tonight. I would like to know what you see to be the future of the Klingon Empire both during and after this final season of Deep Space 9?
Sirella
ROR: Like I said, a series. A Klingon series. Right? Write in!
Q: Gowron never seems to blink. Am I missing something or are your eyelids taped open?
Adam
ROR: That's actually digitalized. But seriously, you're right. I do make an effort never to blink. Good observation.
Q: Hi Robert! Congratulations on making Gowron such a favorite character. You seem to have a lot of fun with the role - what would YOU like to see happen with your character this year? Perhaps a mate?
frederik
ROR: I would love to have a mate on DS9. I've always thought Gowron would be more fun having a mate and having a very over-bearing wife would be lots of fun for the fans and for me too.
Gowron's wife should be about eight feet tall...Glowering over him. And her eyes should be exactly the same.
Q: Robert I met you last year at a Star Trek convention run by a good friend of mine, Scott McMillan in Aberdeen. I was just wondering how you found your time in Scotland and if you enjoyed the Convention. I remember you especially liked the bar!
Gordon
ROR: I had a great time in Scotland. I actually considered wearing my Scottish team football shirt that I was given there. I almost wore it tonight. I think Klingons belong in Scotland...if they visit Planet Earth. Particularly near the bars. I enjoyed Scotland very much and would love to return. But they have guards all along Hadrian's Wall, watching out for me.
Q: Congrats on the triplets and I hope that they grow up with your fabulous blue eyes. What is it like to get dressed up in all that klingon gear and will you be returning soon as I love Gowron?
vicky
ROR: That's the name of the new series... "I Love Gowron." Or we could call it, "Gowron's Three Sons" or "My Three Klingons with Bug Eyes." There's a photo of them that will be rotating and thank you for the congratulations. I'll be sending them to you next week.
Q: What is your opinion about the whole Star Trek phenomenon?
Is it excessive, not enough fans out there, etc. Thanks.
Ana
ROR: I think Star Trek is something that our society and culture wanted and needed back in the 60's and in some ways, our culture and society catches up to it every 10 or 15 years. What the original Trek series did was create a society that was not in need of a lot of the things we need today. It would take too long to explain my view on it. John Lennon said something like, first you have to dream and then you can have the reality of your dreams. And Trek has done that. Look at the phones we have now.
Q: I am wondering where I can achieve a cd that can teach me the Klingon language and customs. I have been looking for the game Klingon, but have had no luck. I have always admired the skills and stregth of the Klingons, along with their code of honor.
Mitchell
ROR: There have been two; Star Trek: Klingon, made by Simon and Schuster Interactive and there have been two language tapes by Marc Okrand, the author of the Klingon language. And Marc Okrand is the guy who teaches me.
Q: Mr. O'Reilly, is it true that your nephew in New York was very upset with the birth of your triplets? It is rumored that with their birth (he) was displaced as the next in line for the Klingon home world thrown.
pmjr
ROR: This is true. But he'll get over it when I give him all the land from the House of Mogh.... which at the present time is three garbage cans on an asphalt parking lot.
Q: Who were role models when you were growing up?
Jen III
ROR: Robert E. Lee, Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio and Willie Mays. (A strange group of people. And very eclectic.)
Q: Can I have your autograph?
Allen
ROR: Yes, I'm signing it right now.
Q: A number of Star Trek actors have gone on to direct episodes, and some have written sci-fi novels. Are you interested in either of these?
Joe
ROR: I'm writing something right now. And I have plans to write something else with someone who can't be named but is in the Star Trek universe. I've directed a lot of theatre and would love to direct film.
Q: Can you come to my house?
Allen
ROR: Yes, I'm bringing your autograph as we speak.
Q: do you enjoy playing a klingon or would you rather be a character that would make you recognizable to the viewers?
the mighty mo
ROR: There are pros and cons to both... I think I'm better off where I am. The first day of a convention, I'm rarely recognized, which is fun for me. I have a ball walking around pretending I'm a fan and people tell me strange things. And sometimes make fun of me. One time I had my Klingon emblem upside down and was railed for it. The guy was very embarrassed the next day.
Q: I love your work, Mr. O'Reilly. What do you think of "Insurrection"?
Gul
ROR: I love it. It's great! Jonathan does another great job.
Q: Do you still remember any line in klingonese? I loved when you said in DS9: "This I can't forgive nor forget" !
Antonio, from Brazil
ROR: Tuk K'lok ..... kluck kluck kluck.
Translation: Get me to the bathroom quick!
Q: Did you have any reservations about taking or continuing a role in Star Trek because of all the extra attention Trek actors get, like interviews, action figures, convention appearances, and autograph requests?
Joe
ROR: I had no idea any of that stuff would happen. I was actually doing the lead role in a play called, "Skin of Our Teeth" at the same time I was shooting my first Gowron show. Another actor said to me, "Oh it sounds like a 'life' thing". I had no idea what he was talking about and now I do.
Q: Do you have any heir apparent ? Having fun unc?
PMJR
ROR: First I'm sending you the triplets for a week... And you can be their Luk Pak.
Translation: Official diaper changer of the royal family. Of which you are now 4th in line.
And Yeah, I'm having a ball. Translation: Luk Tow
Q: Why were you late?
movitz
ROR: I'm not late... I'm just on a different continuum. And ten pounds overweight.
Q: Hello Mr. O'Reilly, I would just like to know how did you go about getting a role on Star Trek? I have been interested in pursuing this and I do not know where to begin.
Rammie
ROR: Go to school and study acting. For about six years... Come to Hollywood. Forget all your training. And begin again. You will succeed.
Q: As a cast member on DS9 do you hope to get other Star Trek roles as well?
Wes
ROR: Yes, I am shaving my head as we speak. Guess which role I want?
Q: Favorite acting role?
Bernard
ROR: Gowron and the Mad Bomber in Max Headroom. And anything that's a western that I've done. I've done a lot of westerns.
Q: how many klingons would it take to change a lightbulb?
Kenneth
ROR: There is honor in darkness.
Q: I LOVE STAR TREK! HAVE YOU MET WILLIAM SHATNER?
BIGGEST TREKKY IN THE WORLD!
ROR: Yes, I have met William Shatner on "TJ Hooker" of which I did two.
Q: Having one baby is a full time job! How are you managing with 3! I salute You.
Nikki
ROR: Klingons are tough with the diapers. It is a good day to diaper.
Q: what has been your most embarrasing moment during the filming of an episode ?
Kenneth
ROR: Tripping. Klingons are known for their tripping abilities, particularly in the old days when all the shoes were made for Michael Dorn and they were size 13 and a half and my shoe size is three and a half. Fairly close to my IQ.
Q: Do u collect any Star trek items?
Joey
ROR: I actually collect Gowron action figures. I have English, French, Italian, German, French Canadian... Let me know if there's any others out there.
Q: do you have a fan club?
voyager63
ROR: Yes. Check the transcript when it's up for the information.
Q: I think you have done a great job playing the Klingon High Council Chancellor, you brought the role strength and credibility, are you sorry to see it go with DS9 on TV?
Edward
ROR: Even though DS9 goes, the Klingon empire continues. If you want to see it, write in, write in, write in,......
Q: Are you and Michael Dorn good friends in real life? (not saying that Star Trek isn't real life.
Jean Luc Picard
ROR: Michael and I are friends on the set, but like many actors, we just don't have time to socialize off the set.
Q: Are you going to be a main character on "The Klingon Series", or a guest star like you were on TNG and DS9?
111 of 112
ROR: In my own mind, I'm the lead.
Q: Can you name 3 things that either you or Gowron can not live with out?
Larile
ROR: Peanut butter. Bananas. And Chocolate.
As for me... Aluminum siding. Plastic pantyhose. And Rubber underware.
Q: Do you feel it was a bad choice to kill off Jadzia Dax on DS9?
John
ROR: No, she wanted to go.
Q: What type of Klingon is Gowron in comparison to other Klingons?
Christian
ROR: A fun Klingon... and the most bug-eyed.
Q: previous to playing Gowron, had you any experience with Star Trek? And was it easy or difficult for you to embrace the complexities of the character? Also, I believe Klingons Belong in Texas!
Dagoth
ROR: I was an original Star Trek fan. Complexities of a Klingon?
Klingons are not complex... And neither are Texans. So they make a good match.
Q: You have appeared on episodes of T. J. Hooker. How did you like working with William Shatner?
rua
ROR: Great. And he was a very generous actor.
Q: Are you in the new Star Trek movie?
Dottkomm
ROR: No.
Q: Who or whom did you pattern Gowron after, or how did it come about in creating Gowrons personality?
Danny
ROR: I did a role in King Lear. I'll let you guess which character Gowron is patterned after. But a character in King Lear.
Q: When you speak Klingon do they tell what you're saying or do they just tell you how to say it?
Dottkomm
ROR: They tell us both.
Q: Do you have any upcoming appearances that we should look forward to?
ShellieW
ROR: I just finished filming a motion picture with Tony Todd. Tony stars in it... Candyman III.
ROR: We just finished filming, so I don't know any release dates.
Q: Will you ever come to Israel for a Star Trek convention ?
Roy
ROR: I would love to, if invited.
Q: Any need for a person to cover the night shift?
Susi
ROR: Thanks. A car will be over to pick you up momentarily. But seriously, we love our guys.
Q: Has the Star Trek Insurrection movie been shown in the Paramount Theater there at the studio?
Ed
ROR: Yes, but for test screenings only.
Q: What drew you to acting in the first place, your inspiration?
Quicksand
ROR: I wanted to be a character actor. And cold cash.
Robert, thank you very much for joining us here tonight. We're all hoping to seeing you this season on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine!"
ROR: Thanks everyone. Qapla. I have to run and put my guys to bed.
Nuqneh y'all.
(That's Southern Klingon... from Texas)
