Mr. de Lancie, of course, plays the omnipotent "Q" on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, and STAR TREK: VOYAGER. He also appears in the new CD-ROM, STAR TREK: BORG.
Question: I have listened to several of your audio books from Simon and Schuster and have enjoyed them a lot. Do you plan to continue reading those Star Trek stories? (Hope so)
James
John de Lancie: Yes, Leonard Nimoy and I have setup a company called Alien Voices. Our first works are going to be "The Time Machine" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth", and they'll be distributed by Simon and Schuster.
Q: Will Q ever appear on DS9 or Voyager again? Do you think he'll be in a film?
Darren
JDL: The general question of will I appear on Voyager, DS9, or anything else, is not something that I can answer. The reasoning is that I'm not the one who hires myself.
The producers of Star Trek hire me, and if they choose to have me on these shows, great. If not, so be it.
Q: Do you think there is some personality trait (or traits) you have that enable you to play such a delightful villain? Or is just your superb acting talent?
Kathleen
JDL: I think that actors play characters well that they are close to. In this case, the part of Q has been expanded enough and is large enough to include a lot of elements of my personality.
I like to hear that you think it's superb acting.
Q: It's been ten year since Encounter at Farpoint. looking back, is there anything you think that could have better or different with Q?
Sergio
JDL: The only thing that I would have done better or differently would have been to do it more often.
Q: What other project's are you doing now.......
Elim
JDL: I'm getting ready to do tomorrow a David Kelly show called "The Practice", which has yet to be aired. I'm working quite a bit on these audio tapes.
Q: Hello. I saw you in an episode of the remake of Mission Impossible. Did you enjoy that project, and do you enjoy playing the villain?
Kathleen
JDL: Yes, I enjoyed the project of Mission: Impossible very much, especially where we shot it, which was in Australia.
Q: Will you come to Australia to do a convention we would love you to...Lots of big Q fan's over here.
Jon
JDL: The only way I can go to Australia to do a convention is to be hired...
Q: Was there one episode that you wished Q could have been in, as a plot twist, but wasn't?
Dariush
JDL: I don't watch the shows enough to be able to answer that question.
Q: What is your favorite non Trek role you've performed?
Borg
JDL: Probably Jack Tanner in "Man and Superman". Also, just recently Janos Bartok in "Legend", or Eugene.
Q: Hi, will you be in First Contact?
Borg
JDL: Yes, I'm in First Contact, I will be in First Contact, I will be in all of the upcoming DS9 and Voyager episodes, and they are making a TV series called "Q Meets Gene Roddenberry In The Other World" :-)
While we're at it, I will be happy to sign any Star Trek cremation urns :-)
Q: Mr. De Lancie, Have you had any luck finding any other parts for omnipotent beings?
Chris
JDL: I'm a father of two.
Q: I love the Star Trek Universe because of the Social Points that it deals with. Do you believe that this current world of ours could ever become the "dream society" that Star Trek portrays?
Emet
JDL: Never...I think we're going to hell in a handbasket. I'd be surprised if we're still around in a hundred years. Between plagues, greenhouse, overpopulation...
Q: Do you have any regrets for appearing in Soaps? My Mom , whenever she sees you still say "There's Eugene from Days of our Lives".
Irene
JDL: Not at all. I enjoyed my time immensely, I think soap operas today are the repertory companies of yesteryear, and they are much maligned, but the point of the matter is a lot of good actors have come out of them.
Q: Do you have any input into the creation of the character of "Q"?
Ken
JDL: The script is a blueprint, a two-dimensional blueprint, and the actor must bring the third dimension, hence the actor must always have input in the creation of the character.
I have, on rare occasions, had input on the direction the story might take.
Q: John, if it wasn't for you, there would be no subject matter for ST8 and Sisko's wife would still be alive, do you take some satisfaction in knowing this? :)
Jim
JDL: Immense satisfaction :-)
Q: What are your Omnipotent kids names?
Paul
JDL: Pluto and Saturn :-)
Q: Can I have your autograph?
Ben
JDL: Yes, I'm writing on the screen right now! Call it..."screen writing"
Q: Are you disappointed the Borg made it to the big screen before Q?
Houdini
JDL: The Borg is only an appetizer to the main event.
Q: Do you have any interest in directing?
Herb
JDL: I enjoy directing plays and things like that.
Q: Have you worked on stage with your wife?
Glenn
JDL: Yes, I've done a number of shows with my wife.
Q: Do you find it strange that what is essentially a deeply irritating character has received such widespread fan appreciation?
Hannah
JDL: Not at all. In light that the other characters are more deeply irritating.
Q: You have a wonderful sense of humor. Have you ever done comedy?
Skillet
JDL: No.
Q: How much money are you getting for this? :)
Todd
JDL: One hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and a free mousepad, which was the deal breaker.
Q: How does your wife feel about being married to the most powerful being known to the Federation?
Dariush
JDL: As long as it's good for her...
Q: Is it easier to work with a friend, i.e. Kate Mulgrew?
Dariush
JDL: No, I just find it different, and it's nice working with someone whom I've known for so many years.
Q: How was it to work with Suzie Plaxson?
Gleknar
JDL: Suzie Plaxson was just terrific. I think we make a great combo together, and I hope that they find reasons to use her again. Not at the expense of using me, of course...
Q: Are people taken aback by your being human when they meet you in person?
Matthew
JDL: I've always felt they were taken aback by me being omnipotent when they meet me in person.
Q: Can I have your mousepad? ;o)
Iain
JDL: I'm sticking it through the disk drive as I speak...
You should have it, depending on your modem speed...
Q: Were you good friends with Gene Roddenberry?
Dariush
JDL: Gene and I go way back.
Q: If you had powers like Q, how would you use them?
Ben
JDL: I hope that I would use them for good, stop some of the insanity which goes on around us on a daily basis, and to supplant it with my own insanity...
Q: What do you reckon of Q the action figures?
Barry
JDL: I don't feel they're anatomically correct.
Q: Are you pleased with the "Not quite evil" nature of Q in recent episodes?
Ken
JDL: Since there have only been ten episodes with Q, we have to be careful about how he is used. My instincts may be a little towards comedy, but if there are future episodes, we need to always remember the darker side of Q.
Q: Were you a Star Trek fan when the original series started?
Paul
JDL: No. I was a fan of the movies, I was not a fan of the television show, not that there was any difference between the two, but because I didn't watch that much television, and don't to this day.
Q: Have the Babylon 5 people approached you about playing a part in their universe?
Jim
JDL: No, Babylon 5 has not approached me. I might be bi-special, but I'm not bi-network...
Q: Do you think Q will ever get his comeuppance?
Vulcan
JDL: I can't answer writing questions.
Q: You have such a quick wit. What does it take to meet you in person? You seem like a great person to just kick back and hang with.
People
JDL: You've got it all wrong, baby...
Q: Do you have a fake identity on the Internet?
Iain
JDL: Yes.
We'd like to thank John de Lancie for taking the time to chat with us today.
JDL: Signing off now, I feel like I've plumbed the depths.
