Majel Barrett Roddenberry

Question: There has been a recent announcement that you're involved in a new production based upon material your husband wrote. Can you tell us anything about it?
Joe

Majel Barrett Roddenberry: It was supposed to start filming about 2 weeks after we returned, but Gene got a call from Paramount requesting him to start into pre-production on the motion picture.

So it got pushed to the back burner, where, unfortunately, it stayed., until I rediscovered it in the "Roddenberry Trunk." It was good then, and it's great now.

It's a science fiction which takes place in the "immediate future". And the basic theme is human-kind history during past oppression and invasion has always been fighting against loss of individual freedom no matter what the rewards for being a slave are or punish for searching for that freedom. There are always those who will fight. And that's the basic theme.

Earth is playing host to an alien race. These people bring us cures for AIDS, cancer. They show us how to feed millions where only thousands were fed before.

Just keep in mind that fat and happy slavery is still slavery. It has a "Mission Impossible" feeling which will emphasize, intrigue, mystery, suspense. We call it our "T & A show," meaning technology and action.

We have incredible partners. David Kirschner produced "American Tale" and the "Flinstones", among many others, and is as close to a re-incarnation of Gene's thoughts and ideas as one could find. My other partner is Doug Netter, the exec. producer of Babylon 5.

Q: Did you enjoy your work on Babylon 5 recently? Do you have any plans to return to that show?
Don

MBR: Of course I enjoyed. I would LOVE to return to the show. JS and time permitting, the answer is maybe. At least I hope so.

Q: How do you feel about the event here in Huntsville -excuse me- "Star Trek," Alabama?
Alan

MBR: I'm thrilled. I've never seen so much excitement in my life. In 30 years of going to conventions, I am awe-struck.

Q: Seeing how women have had equal opportunity and responsibility in the Star Trek universe, why didn't Mr. Roddenberry further pursue your original role as Captain Pike's number one?
David

MBR: Because he decided to marry me instead. He could only keep one of us, and he decided that Leonard wouldn't be the one to marry.

Q: G'day Majel! Did you ever think 30 years ago that you'd be sitting here today celebrating STAR TREK with us - all over the world?!
John

MBR: Good God, no! But it is a thrill.

Q: Will you be coming out with an autobiography?
Mike

MBR: Not on your life! One day, I may write something, just to refute the others, but no one needs to know more than they THINK they do about Gene and my private life.

Q: Do you think your character will pursue Jean-Luc Picard in an upcoming movie?
Mary

MBR: That would be my dream come true, but I can promise you that will not come true. I doubt that is part of Paramount's future plans. I'm afraid that if Partick heard about it, he might grow hair.

Q: Is your son in the arts also?
Mrs. B

MBR: I have taken him out his life of debauchery and our company is going to make an honest man of him and put him to work in Battleground Earth.

He happily agreed when he remembered about the starlets he would meet.

Q: Are you planning on being on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or Star Trek: Voyager some time this year?
Mary

MBR: I would love to be on both of them. Write a letter.

Q: Do you think that the current Star Trek shows and movies are still representing Gene's vision of the way Star Trek should be?
SilverSurfer

MBR: I believe that if he were alive he would go along with what they are doing. Remember, they too are going through great changes, as Gene would appreciate, because they are learning and responding. And I think they are doing a damn fine job.

Q: How did you become the official voice for the ship's computer for the show?
David

MBR: I slept with the producer.

Q: Did Gene know what he had back in the early years did he say " this is something big" or was it more "I hope this flies"?
Eric

MBR: It was I hope this flies. You just don't get up in the morning and say I'm going create a legend. All he wanted as the opportunity to get some things off his chest that he wasn't allowed to do because of censorship.

Q: Have you worked on the new movie (Star Trek: First Contact) and if so, could you tell us anything about it?

MBR: Yes, I did the computer voice last week and yes, I know something about it but no, I'm not going to tell you about it.

Q: Are you looking for new talent for battleground earth?
Brian

MBR: Not if your name begins with "b"

Q: What do you think of the Babylon 5 and Star Trek "war"?
Vorlon

MBR: I think it's non existent. I think it's a press agent's dream - a dream of the internet factions... it just doesn't exist.

Q: What do you think of all this new technology like the web and things?
TC

MBR: Things, is exactly the way I feel about it. I'm computer illiterate. I'm still looking for the on/off button. If I talk to it and it doesn't respond I don't want to have anything to do with it.

Q: Did you visit the set of the upcoming Star Trek: Deep Space 9 "tribble" episode? If so how did it feel?
Brian

MBR: I felt very nostalgic. A lump actually appeared in my stomach. I felt alone, I felt deserted. It was a weird feeling, I just can't describe it. Scary.

Q: How can I get an autograph of you?
Tom

MBR: Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a picture if you want me to autograph it to: Lincoln Enterprises or it may be purchased through Lincoln, Box 691370, Los Angeles, 90069

Q: How did you survive marriage to such a great mind, when marriage to an ordinary man can be so chaotic

MBR: I dig chaos.

Q: What would you or Gene have changed about Star Trek if you had the chance?
Dale

MBR: He changed what he wanted, which was to make the Klingons good, because there's no such thing as an all bad race. As for me I would've played No. 1.

Q: How is Rod doing. What is his take on this whole thing?

MBR: He's totally confused and scared to death.

Q: Majel, your response to the autobiography question earlier seems to say you've read the "latest" Star Trek insider book; any specific thoughts or comments on it?
Mike

MBR: I'm surprised and unhappy that Mr. Solow's memory is not better, or that he feels such bitterness about the Star Trek event.

Q: I attended a presentation Gene gave in 1976 in Indianapolis. I felt then that I was listening to the 21st Century's Jules Verne.

MBR: I agree with you!

Q: What do you think of shows like the X-files and upcoming Dark Skies that tend more to the darker side of Science Fiction ?
Andrew

MBR: I don't think the X Files is dark...On Dark Skies: I thought half of it was very entertaining. It's getting mixed reviews but I don't know how the public will accept it. Perhaps I haven't seen enough of it to form an opinion, and I sure don't want to comment on something I know little about.

Q: Do you have to go through voice lessons in order to maintain your voice level?
Ray

MBR: Lord no! I just yell at Rod.

Q: Do you hope to have your character and Rene's Character (Odo) re-unite in the future?
Shawn

MBR: I would love that. I really feel that of all the men that Lwaxana has chased, that her real honest to goodness true love is and always will be Odo.

Q: How did you feel about the reuse of the name "Number One" for TNG, when it was your original title?

MBR: Not too good except that I adore Jonathan so I bit my tongue and shut up.

MBR: I want to thank you for allowing me the privilege of talking to you today and I certainly hope to see all of you soon. Peace and Love.
