Also known as the Orion Syndicate, the name "Orion" refers to a loose nation or empire run and administered by green-skinned humanoids. The most notable of these are the so-called "green animal women," females who wield a preternatural influence over humanoid males of many species, and are therefore far more independent and powerful than appearances would indicate. Crime, including various forms of piracy and black-market trade, are rife among the Orions, who in 2267 were revealed to be behind a number of illegal mining operations in the Coridan system. The Orions prize their political neutrality and independence, since a close alliance with any of the major powers of the Alpha or Beta Quadrants could jeopardize Orion's numerous criminal enterprises.
