Justin Lin, director of Star Trek Beyond, was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and grew up in Orange County, California. He studied film at the UCLA Film School before making his feature film (co-)directing debut with Shopping for Fangs, which starred John Cho, the Trek franchise's current Sulu. Lin's other early credits include Crossover, which was a documentary; the short La Revolucion de Iguodala!; and Better Luck Tomorrow, an indie sensation he wrote and directed, and which set the stage for his studio debut, Annapolis.
Following Annapolis, Lin directed such features as The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift, Finishing the Game, Fast & Furious, Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6. He also helmed such television productions as Community, Scorpion (he directed the pilot and executive produces the series) and True Detective.
