In 2362, Leijten, along with Geordi La Forge and three other crewmembers serving on the U.S.S. Victory, was exposed to an alien retro-DNA on Tarchannen III. In 2367, the DNA nearly overtook Leijten, mutating her into a humanoid creature that could only be seen via UV light.
