In the alternate timeline created by Nero’s temporal incursion, his surprise attack on the U.S.S. Kelvin in 2233 widows the pregnant Winona Kirk, who serves there alongside her husband, and she goes into early labor aboard the dying ship. Thus, in this reality her second son James is born aboard a fleeing shuttle, and must be raised without knowing his father firsthand. She remarries and returns to the family’s Iowa roots on Earth, having named James after her own father.
