Kellerman, Sally

Early in her career, tall willowy blond Sally Kellerman guest starred in a pilot episode that became part of a legend, playing Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, the first woman to play opposite William Shatner’s Kirk in the second pilot that finally sold Star Trek, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”

It would be only five more years until Kellerman took her Oscar-nominated turn as the original Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s feature-film version of M*A*S*H. Kellerman, a 1937 native of Long Beach, Calif., was a guest on series like Outer Limits (twice), Centennial, Columbo and 90210. She appeared in later Altman titles such as The Player and Brewster McCloud, the latter helping to restart her singing career—having had a contract with Verve Records at age 17 and an album for Decca in 1970.
