Ensign Pavel Chekov is the navigator for the Enterprise, although he seems to know so much about the operations of the ship (including the ship’s transporters) that Captain Pike initially refers to him as “Russian whiz kid.” Chekov actively monitors the ship’s sensors and apparently is also tuned in to incoming transmissions.
