Originally in "Dagger of the Mind," the landscape of the planet seen when Kirk and Dr. Noel beam down was a re-use of a matte painting from "Where No Man Has Gone Before," with a different foreground (bottom).
In the Remastered episode (top), the artists at CBS Digital created what is arguably a more reasonable depiction of the exterior of the elevator shaft to the penal colony — as opposed to a lithium cracking station used completely out of context. You will see that the elevator entrance is matched to the set piece in the subsequent shot.
The rings seen in the sky match the reimagined planet shots in orbit, and according to Michael Okuda, are "a bit of a nod to noted astronomical artist Chesley Bonestell."
