Historical truth: On January 31, 1998 the last detachment of Marines stood down from being the men-at-arms on Naval vessels. The Navy had started to provide their own men-at-arms or security force on naval ships. The Marine naval detachments became the Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST). Not sure what use they would be used for other than reconnaissance in the future. Who know maybe a Section 31 type organization. Notice that the starships do not have fighter aircraft to protect the ship or for use in attacking other star ships. Why? Ineffective firepower. Also notice there's no Air Force in Star Trek.

Why do you need airplanes when you have starships?

In an original Star Trek episode Kirk and another character are talking and Kirk brings up that Star Fleet is a combined service.

Also in a DS9 episode The Defiant is tasked to protect a troop transport. Sounds like people who could be more trained in combat than a normal Star Fleet officer, even a security person.

I just checked the transcripts - the closest I saw was Merchant Marines.

And just for fun, I did see Starfleet Marines metioned in Memory Gamma, but we know those are just ideas, nothing canon.

Just curious, how many Star Trek Wikis are there? And what level of canon does each represent?

What I know of is:

Memory Alpha - all canon trek

Memory Beta - expanded universe

Memory Gamma - includes plans, ideas, etc.

There is one more reason why Marines are not on Star Trek. Marines do not wear "a child's uniform." The Star Fleet uniform is staying with maritime tradition. The uniform resembles the old crackerjack naval uniform.

Close, but a little off:

Memory Alpha: canon Trek--anything witnessed on-screen. Dialog, background art, etc. Including TAS

Memory Beta: Licensed products--novels, Tech Manuals, RPGs... anything with Paramount's official seal of approval (and royalty payments)

Memory Gamma: Exspanded Universe--this is where Fan material comes in. Fan web-series, homebrew RPGs, prolific Fan-Fic, etc.

They still have Air Force (well, not used by protagonists). In ENT episode "Detained" they were nearly shot down by the foreign planet's air force, weren't they? And that was a race that had starships, too.

Marines...I dont know about that

Same reason our current US Navy has them.
