I've been out of the country, so not had a chance to post here recently.  It looks like a ghost town.  Did I miss something while I was away?

There's not a lot happening in Star Trek and we've got some trolls / spammers running everyone off to other boards.  It's really sad.  (And it's almost impossible to get the admins to remove the spam, even after several of us complain many times.)

Yeah I have been noticing the same things myself. But people still come to check out the news and to vote in the polls each week I think. I think part of the issue was that people were getting too vocal about their political views on the boards, and many of us want to discuss Star Trek, not politics. Or at the very least it needs to be Star Trek politics, not real life politics. And there is a lot happening in Star Trek right now with the Blu-Ray project, but nobody aside from me has really been very interested in discussing the blu-rays for some reason.

Actually, it was Star Trek that got a lot of people (including me) into looking at politics.  Real life politics and social issues have always been large part of the Star Trek storyline / universe - just "disguised" with SciFi.

For those of us that have been around for a while, we can remembr the days when there used to be a lot of those topics being on the forum (usually reserved for 10-Forward or a specific episode) with 40 or 50 people talking about it on a thread.  I'm not to sure what you mean by "too vocal"... and I might be way off in what you're referecing, but to me, that just means freedom of speech.... and the answer to one person's freedom of speech is everyone's right to free speech... the more the better!  We should encourage that freedom (especially if we disagree with the other viewpoint!)

Discussing real world politics or issues is not the problem, the problem is that some people here don't know what "discussion" means. Spamming a thread with vitriolic BS until someone offers a counter-argument and then burying that counter-argument in a page of spam is not a discussion.

That's because most people have woken up and realized that paying for physical media is a waste of money. You can watch every episode here for free or on Netflix for $8/month.

Something else that I think that has contributed is that there doesn't seem to be much in the form of planned events.  The admins here used to have events where they brought in an actor or a writer to discuss their latest work.  That was always fun.

I guess I'm just old fashioned then. I still like my physical copies of media. And I love the blu-rays. The Okuda's and many other people have put a lot of hard work into making them. Just because something is on Netflix does not mean that it is better. I love getting to see the shows remastered in HD. I hope that someday all of Star Trek will be remastered to HD. Plus just because Netflix has the shows right now, that doesn't mean that Netflix will have them forever. Netflix is famous for dropping movies/tv shows after a while.

Netflix probably added Star Trek to their instant streaming service cause watching every episode of just one show requires renting many, many different discs. To watch every episode of just TNG you had to rent about 50 separate regular DVDs which is ridiculous.

I also want to throw out there that I don't necessarily have a problem with discussing real life politics. I just don't like it when it gets out of hand and people start getting mad at eachother. And I also don't like it when real life politics got added into boards that were not in the section for politics. People would often bring up those topics in areas that were for discussing a particular series. But I have found in my time here, many of the fans tend to be very cruel to eachother when someone disagree's with them. Which is funny because they tend to do it while they are quoting IDIC, and I know that has definitely run off people and made them not feel very welcomed here.

For me, it depends on how into the material I am.  For some things, I don't mind streaming content from the internet, but for stuff I'm really into, like Star Trek, I prefer owning the content, so the physical media is nice - I don't have to worry about internet or hosting problems when I'm really wanting to watch it or hosting a marathon, etc.

As for BluRays, as I already own the DVDs, I just don't see the value of buying the BluRays when the DVDs are perfectly good.  I already own all the Star Trek movie DVDs (except the JJtrek) as well as all the seasons for TOS, TNG and DS9.  If might buy the VOY set when they come out in BluRay - we'll see.  I seriously doubt I'll be buying the ENT set.

lol, ENT is the one thats looks the best by far in HD though. Not to mention obviously much cheaper than TNG, DS9, and VOY on blu-ray since there's three less seasons.

True, even though I never missed an episode, I was never a fan of ENT.  I thought the original premise was definitely on the right track, but the implementation of it was way off... at least to me.  I did like Season 4 though, but I don't think that justifies buying the entire series.

Yeah who cares right? Enterprise is on Netflix-streaming in HD for one thing.

What Blu-ray project are you referring to?  Are you referring to the work being done on TNG, or is there something else going on?

Honestly, I won't buy any of the TNG Blu-rays until they go back and redo season 2.  I've heard a ton of complaints about the company that season 2 was outsourced to.

That said, I've got TOS on blu-ray waiting for me back in America.  I ordered them awhile back, but have been of the country since 2007, so can't wait to get back and check them out.  Heard nothing but positive reviews.
