I need some help understanding photon torpedoes. 1: Can they destroy shields? 2: How much torpedoes does it take to destroy shields. 3: If a ship has no shields, can a torpedo one hit it? 4: Torpedoes can't destroy shields in one hit, right?

Well.... I guess you'd also need to combine it with information about shields.

But to answer your questions:

1) Yes

2) Depends on the torpedoes and the shields.

3) Yes (shown many times)

4) Yes, but like #2, it depends on the torpedoes and the shields.

Photon Torpedos like so many special effects were developed as the show went along... and they were limited to the technology of the 1960's special effects... Which I am amazed by what they accomplished back then with what they had to work with... there were no computers and CGI or Dreamworks or Electric Light and Magic studios to produce the effects. The TOS torpedoes were (sound wise) a common garage door spring thunked to make that awesome choppy / firing sound.

The torpedoes themselves in the beginning were glorified "spits" of phaser light. ---*   ---* ---* and they were like the go to weapon (if phasers won't kill what you are fighting with let 'em have it with a photon torpedo barage which was (In TOS era) like a smart bomb that vaporized everything in the vicinity.

The yield... changed dreastically in the movies... lesser bang for the buck... and the newer light effect was the focus... also the shell for Spock's casket in ST II.

What really disappointed me as far as consistency and all that was in ST VI when the cloaked bop blew a hole in the saucer section of the E while deflector shields were still up and operational.

HUH???

Bottom line... it's only a show, not reality... there is bound to be lots of inconsistencies, and there are.
