Does anyone remember photon torpedoes from the original series? They were exactly that, photons, like Thor throwing lighting bolts. When did they become physical?

The first time I rember seeing torpedoes is in WOK. At the moment I can not recall if they had them in the first movie or not.

I know they were used in the original series and one was used by Decker (countermanding Kirk) in TMP when they were in the wormhole and had to destroy the asteroid.

In most of the serieses, they showed physical photon torpedos, as in the photons were encased in a oval shell. Yes, in Into Darkness they were shaped more like a real torpedo, but it's the same idea. I don't remember seeing them in TOS, but a variation was in Enterprise, and all the TNG-era serieses. I remember they buried Spock in one in TWOK. That may have been the first appearance of the casing, but I don't know.

photon torpedoes have never been actual photons, they are a controled antimatter/matter reaction, in tos, they where incased in a shell, but the lights that the shells had on them is all you would see

I'm sure you're all correct.  I suppose that the name "Photon" torpedo gave me a preconceived notion that the torpedoes were actually concentrated light particles/energy.  In fact, I always thought that as long as the dilithium crystals/engines were intact, there would be a virtual endless supply of torpedoes.  When I was a kid watching TOS, I remember that the torpedoes emanating from the Enterprise were white, almost boomerang-shaped flashes of light, again, reinforcing my assertion that these were weaponized light energy.  Thank you all for sharing your thoughts!
