Thanks, OP. Your generic apologist defense really opened my eyes. I'm going to go out and buy ALL the exclusive editions of the Bluray right after I subscribe to your website!

As opposed to Republicans who just plain don't believe in diversity at all...

This was getting off topic, so look for a post I just started in the "General" category entitled "Star Trek and Modern Politics."

After reading that other thread, I want to apologize and take back my little sarcastic comment about your "generic apologist defense." You clearly know way more about what Star Trek is than some of the life-long Trekkies here.

Back on topic, I agree with the general sentiment that "some liked it, some didn't, who cares, get over it."

Whoa. Thank you darmokattanagra.

Am going to mark on my calendar: "September 14th, 2013. Two people, with initially opposing views on the internet, found common ground and peace."

I hear this a lot about this movie and the previous one:

Because JJ was a Star Wars fan, he's out to destroy Star Trek? that is the most illogical conclusion. You can't be a fan of both?. Fans really believe there is this hatred between fans of both franchises. Uusally that because each franchise resent the success of the other, its a rivalry, but botton line, JJ Abrams is paid for a living, his living his make good films and tv series. His track reacord and his demand speaks to what most in the bueiness think of him.

Because JJ is a Star Wars fan, do we have to hate this move? that is the sense I get reading some of these posts.

Here is JJ's strengths: JJ is able to get right into the action and story without wasting screen time. He's able to generate emotional ressponse in us in very short time. His challenge was to give us something new, and fresh but retain the look and feel and history that came before. I think he's done that. There is lots of reoom for improvement but as a whole, continue the course.

I have an interesting update to share. I recently went on vacation to visit my cousin in Washington. Our dads were brothers and best friends.I think of her as my twin cousin because we are so close in age and share many common interests.Howvere we grew up far apart and were reunited when we were 27 years old. She and I are very close friends. She had not seen any of the new Star Trek movies. Now, while growing up, she and her maternal grandfather used to watch the original Star Trek and she has very fond memories of that. I wasn's sure if she would like the new Star Trek with the new cast and all. But I took a chance and we watched Star Trek 2009 together. She was very entralled by it. Her favorite characters are Kirk and Spock. My 2 favorites are Kirk and McCoy but I want to add that I think the whole cast is incredible and doing a wonderful job. We then watched Into Darkness. She wasn't quite as excited about that one but she liked it well  enough that she may watch it again just to understand the story line better. Like many of us, she thought the action was very fast paced and that made it hard to understand the story..Her ending comment on it was interesting. She said, "I think its sad" as most of the story line hinged on the fact that Captain Pike had died. She also liked that Kirk and Spock had become such good friends. Anyway, I had a very interesting visit with her about it. We are both glad that Star Trek is continuing with new movies.

Some responses:

1. Haters exist, but unless you actually hate the films and JJ Abrams and all, you are not a "hater" in my view.

2. Thanks for dropping the political stuff -- whew. Was getting to be a bit of a worry for a moment there.

3. In critiquing a film, it is always more convincing to direct said criticism at specific aspects of the film than it is to criticise fans / viewers who perhaps don't share the critic's opinion.

4. That said, however, people on both sides of the debate (lovers & haters, for want of a better shorthand term) each make some quite valid points. I don't personally find many invalid points in any critique of the film.

Just my tuppence worth. It's approaching midnight so you'll have to excuse me if any part of it is unclear or coming across the wrong way.

I don't hate STID, it was a great movie and it is probably sociologically where GR was around the time of the orginal series. But for me, there is nothing that can touch STNG. His views on the world had really matured at this point. Racial equality, NO religion anymore (there is no religion and the world is better for it), no money, and deep understanding and acceptance of all differences. The wisdom of Picard, etc. It was pretty amazing. So not only can STID not reach that level of "message" but none of the other series really could either such as Voyager, DS9, etc. I think if you are the subset of ST fans that most like STNG, then nothing will ever measure up because who is going to be that brave to write like that? STID is a great movie in the action tradition of ST. And remember it was not easy for STNG to be made, even many of the writers desired to write more action and conflict and GR had to really be a stickler to keep his vision of the future in tacts. I enjoyed the film,  Saw it once at the Cinema...  Will purchase it on DVD soon...

But on first viewing... I did like it...

I don't like JJ Abrams saying he didn't like the philosophical aspect of the Original,  because that's an important part,  but we can't have everything...

Still prefer the Original Series,  but due to the Alternate timeline,  I look at the current films and the originals as two different entities...
