It has always bothered me that Deanna is supposed to possess empathic powers that allow her to read or sense other beings minds and feelings, but in "Allegiance" she couldnt sense that Captain Picard was not Captain Picard at all, but an alien impostor. Even a non path could tell he was not himself, Riker and Crusher noticed his odd behavior, but Deanna the psychic couldnt tell her captain wasnt human.

And in "Where No One Has Gone Before" she didnt know he had been possessed by another alien who was controlling him.

Then in 'Q Who', Guinan called the bridge because she sensed before Troi, that Picard had left the ship when Q whisked him away in the shuttle.

And in "The Schizoid Man" she couldnt tell that Dr Graves consciousness had taken over Data even after she ran psychological tests on him that showed he had "the android equivalent of multiple personality disorder".

And even in the pilot episode she was actually walking inside a sentient alien life form at Farpoint Station, but she didnt know.

I would think that the easiest people to read would be those that she was closest to both emotionally and in physical proximity.

Deanna was in certain episodes more a stater of the obvious. I think most of her problems with the empathic powers is because she is half human and maybe she finds certain people harder to read than others.

But Troi was one of the characters I liked the least as it seemed every other episode it had troi having some kind of headache due to her empathic powers,

Yes, there were a lot of inconsistencies with her abilities. It started out with her and Riker communicating telepathically, then later on she used the excuse "my human emotional response is blocking my empathic ability" on more than one occasion to explain her obvious lapse in the power she was supposed to possess. I loved it when Riker called her aristocratic because she has an apparent advantage of control over others that she can "read".

Just like every series, there are some inconsistencies sometimes.

I just finished watching 'Time Squared' and couldnt help but think about this thread. Captain Picard from six hours in the future comes aboard the Enterprise after witnessing its destruction because he left the ship after Troi told him the entity that was holding them would focus its attention on him and not the Enterprise. Thank goodness he went with his common sense the second time instead of her bad advice.

Deanna Troi was by far one of the worst characters and every episode about her was set regarding her empathic abilities or so it seemed at least one or twice a season. the only time I remember her acting well was in First Contact

What can you do? If she could sense the intentions
and motives of adversaries in every show, it would
be over, before it began. Same with Security. Despite
the future's unbelievable technology, Tasha, or Worf,
can't seem to locate a stowaway, onboard. Or contain
a threat, adequately. STAR TREK sets itself up. Yes,
it does break the Suspension of Disbelief, at times.
But Deanna Troi is an aspect of TNG that seperates it
from TOS and other series. Marina wanted the job and
did everything asked of her. She was a team player ...

It is necessary to let events unfold in a way to let the story continue. I read somewhere that the writers considered not restoring Deannas powers after The Loss but decided against it. If she didnt have the powers all those things would have made more sense. TNG is my favorite ST series but these are things that bugged me.

Deanna was only half Betazoid. She was not able to read thoughts - only of the closest to her, which means her mother and Will Riker.

It was also stated she can't read minds and sense emotions from beings that have uncommon brain patterns, i.e. Ferengi. That would also explain why she was not always able to tell such things as aliens possesing her fellow crewmembers.

And one more thing - she was feeling what others felt. So she could tell if Picard was angry at a point but not neceserily why.

Despite Deanna's Troi's occassional issues with
her Betazoid Senses not being as effective as
they should've been, or needed to be ...
she sure as hell hung on as a character.

Marina was, to start with, at least, very deeply
concerned that her part might be in jeopardy,
but this never came to fruition. Gene Roddenberry
belived in Deanna as a character and in Marina as
an actress. And his instincts were well-founded.
And what an amazingly beautiful woman she was ...
just incredible!

Some species could resist empathy, such as the Ferengi, with their 4-lobed brains.

Plus, it seems to be hard for television and films to portray a telepath interestingly.  Another sci-fi series had a telepath on it, and she seemed to feel her superpowers were not equal to the others on the team.  Since it's not a "power" easily visible--such as super strength or flying--viewers often find it hard to identify with them, although their partners on the show can benefit from their abilities.
