What episodes should one watch in order to appreciate the last episode of the series? From what I read, many of the episodes contain stories that aren't connected to or do not contribute to the main story arc, which involves going home.

watch the first one, then the last one, if all you're interested is purely them getting home.

I guess you can say that many episodes don't contribute to the story arc but Voyager didn't really have a main story arc the way DS9 did. I would recommend watching all the episodes. You may find they don't contribute directly to the main story arc but many episodes are thought provoking, character building, and just plain entertaining.

I find it hard to believe that only the first and the last episodes referred to the journey home.

Watch them all. Even if the main focus of the episode isnt how much farther they have gotten to the alpha quadrant, there is almost always something in it that is important to the ultimate goal. Like when she went into the nebula for coffee, that turned out to be a life form, it took them off course and used up much power that they now had to find a way to replenish. Each one gives you a little update on how much farther theyve come and how it happened, but you have to pay attention.

Thanks! I found some sites with episode summaries and ratings. I think I'll just use them to skip episodes.

In Voyager, there are many character building and entertaining episodes. There are also episodes mixed in there that pertain to their long journey home. But I do agree that to get the jest of it watching the pilot episode, Caretaker, is the most important one. Once you've watched that. Take note of what you consider to the important plots of the story. Then watch Voyager's last episode, End Game, to see if they successfully completed their main story lines. A number of us stayed with Voyager for the full 7 years just to see how all those main story lines would wrap up. My favorite story line to follow was the one between Tom Paris, who was due to return to prison, and his father who was ashamed of his son. Several episodes refer to this. The future fate of the Maquii crew is also mentioned a number of times in the episodes in the fact that they could face prison time for their previous crimes. Also all the Voyager crew yearned to be reunited with friends and loved ones. There are a number stories about this through out the series. I liked watching Voyager very much.

Yes, I am looking for episodes where the need to go home is referred to, and there has to be several, not just the first and the last.

My reason for doing this is that I don't want to watch the whole series, but I don't want to miss anything important, such as the introduction of a new main character, attempts to shorten their trip, etc. I read, however, that there are a few episodes that do not refer to the journey at all but are well-made, and I can consider those.

if you want the story about their journey home you just need the first episode, where they get stranded, and the last episode where they actually got home. All other episodes are failed attempts at getting home so they don't contribute to the main story arc of getting home, or they are character building episodes or just interesting episodes to watch. But you're not interested in that, just the main arc of getting home...so Caretaker and Endgame are all you need

I am confused Since the show is about the journey and they are always on the move and always trying to shorten the trip and introduced to new species in new encounters each episode then they all contribute to thte arc in some way. If you dont want to miss anything important you need to watch them all but if you dont want to watch the whole thing why bother.

I noticed that some episodes do not have anything to do with shortening their trip, although some that don't are well-made. I don't want to miss those.

I don't want to watch the whole thing because, as several have pointed out, the series is generally average, with only a few seasons that do very well. However, I don't want to miss key developments, such as the arrival of a major character, etc.

With that, I decided to use tv.com to look at the episode summaries and ratings.

It depends what you want to see from the show.

Me, personally, I am the person who goes in order and never skips an episode, but I know not all people are like that. If you want to know if tehy get home or not, watch the first and last. But if you want to know more about the characters and see the story more in depth, I would suggest watching all of them.

Again, I understand not everyone sees things as I do.
