To preface things, I began watching TOS at the age of 8 (I am 17 now) and have been a trekkie since my father introduced me to the series and have seen EVERYTHING (including the animated series) and I love trek for what it is: great allegorical storytelling and a fun, lighthearted look at the world objectively at the time while putting a clever twist on it (being a history buff too, I understand the significance of the stories)....that being said, I went to see the reboot movie knowing what it was going to be: a summer blockbuster take on a series that I love...and I liked it! I do not consider myself 'mindless' for liking it, but I went into it knowing it wasnt going to be trek and came out thinking it was fun (same with STID, but I think having Cumberbatch be garth- a not so explored villian as opposed to messing with Meyer and Montalban's genius...but CUmberbatch was great anyway)....I know that this new glamorous 'new\alternate universe' practically draws all attention from the prime universe, (yet gives plenty of freedom for writing new tales) but I have had at least a dozen or so friends (who are not trekkies at all) like the movies so much they started watching TOS and liking it...I will always love classic trek more, and JJ's take was far from perfect, but is it a sin to like both? your thoughts?

Do you like "The lord of the rings"? I worship the books and the author (along with Dickens and Dame Christie) but hated the first two movies and refused to watch the third one. However, the movies introduced countless people to the original. So, no it's not a sin.

Blalock & Nimoy were the best two actors in the Star Trek universe. Go Vulcans!

I regret to say that I have not read the books\saw the movies (and I plan to eventually because everyone told me to)...but I just know a lot of people slam the new trek and believe me I dont worship JJ or the new trek but for me its fun and as I wrote in another post, I am currently writting a story on the alternate USS Reliant to try to bring some classic trek to the alternate universe

No, it's not a "sin" to like JJ Trek (some call it "faux Trek".)  It's okay to have differing opinions than others.

i'll watch anything trek, i don't hate the new movies, in fact  out of the two new films, i prefered the first one, introducing an alternative timeline was a clever move, yes, there i found a few brake screech moment here and there,  but at least there's something to keep trek alive, and if its gets more people interested, thats always a plus, but they will never replace the originals.

I do think it's interesting that at the convention in Las Vegas this year, the crowd voted on the movie favorites.  According to them, STID was so bad, it was even worse that Shatner's Final Frontier.

I dont really agree that it should be not considered trek because it doesnt cater to us as trekkies....but thats the point (75% of it at least) to bring in a mainstream audience, and dumbing it down a bit (no disrespect to those who liked the movie like me) is a part of the process...should trekkies be protective of this great franchise: yes! should we be annoying fanboys who cant except an attempt to revive a fantastic show...as I said, the new trek is not gospel to me but I am accepting of it...its a parallel universe, enjoy the prime! nobody is stopping you! I for one will take advantage of this revival to finally write a trek novel!

I love both of the new movies, and i'm glad to see that there are other people who realized that they are on an alternate timeline. I think the reason that many people don't like them is because they expect them to be just like the originals and, well, there are different actors, an alternate timeline, and even some different characters. Of course it's going to be different!! I must say though, when i saw STID, i was so excited when i realized who the bad guy was that i went home and watched the OS episode and movie. Cumberbach did a good job playing the superhuman egomaniac, but he will never be able to live up to the original. All in all, i love anything star trek, whether it's just like the original or not. Besides, there are a few discrepancies among the different star trek series, and i don't hear (or read) anyone complaining about those...

Yeah its good to see fans of the alternate universe who love classic trek like I do...i knew cumberbatch was khan going in and I was a little disapointed it wasnt gary mitchell or garth or an original villan but benedict was amazing...I certainly paln on getting it ont blue ray to try and catch even more fan services and try to begin the exposure of the parallel universe in books!

'original' meaning one orci or kurtzman made, not a TOS antagonist....if they can make a marvel tv series, I hope they at least try to get a trek show on (whether prime or alternate)...I look forward to future star trek info and news while I revel in its classic glory with reruns

In a nutshell,

Perhaps it is a sin to like both. But sinners have more fun than saints.

I Say What's Wrong With liking Both? I Am so Sick of People Trashing JJ Abrams And Accusing Him Of Killing Trek, When He's Doing No Such Thing! Those Purists need To heed The Words Of Shatner And Get a Life!

I half agree...Trekkies should make sure trek is not totally 'corrupted' but I like the new movies...we need that perfect balance of protective and open, which seems quite hard to attain...and as I always say, I found the new movies to be fun!

I didn't hate the new movies, but it didn't compare with the rest of the franchise. The problem is when you label it Star Trek, it has a whole cannon to live up to, and it didn't. It flat out betrayed many of the concepts and values of the Original Series. Instead of Starfleet being an honorable organization, they had to make it more of a "badass" crew, which I really didn't like. It did lead some people to true Trek, though, so it wasn't all bad.

100% agree...it had clear pros and cons...but I think you have to give some credit to the new cast for taking on their roles with a poise that is rather fantastic...Karl Urban and Quinto have been great (in my mind)...and Pine is a good younger Kirk....the second movie just should have had a different villan and less homage to TWOK
