"I loved the new movies, and want to get into the TV series, but I don't know where to start."

My responce to the question would be TNG and TOS.

I'm 53 years old and grew up with the original series as a fan.
But looking at TOS I see it's shortcomings and the compromises Gene Roddenbury had to make.

For example, Mr Roddenbury saw a women as number 2 and on occasion in the big chair but the executives at Paramount wouldn't have it.

I feel Mr. Roddenbury had more of his way with TNG and it's interesting to watch episodes and compare what Gene Roddenbury wanted and what he finally got with TNG.

The original series is worth watching for some really good stories some great acting and Rodeenbury's ideals and TNG for all of the above plus a Star Trek for the end of the 20th century.

The reboots are fine and I'm glad that there are newbies to talk to about Star Trek.

Keep your hailing frequencies open.
