The German mathematicianChristian Goldbach, of Brandenburg-Prussia, wrote a letter to Leonhard Euler, on June 7, 1742, in which he proposed the following conjecture:

Every integer which can be written as the sum of two primes, can also be written as the sum of as many primes as one wishes, until all terms are units.

“Goldbach's conjecture” is one of the oldest and best-known unsolved problems in number theory and in all of mathematics.

Isaac Asimov's short story "Sixty Million Trillion Combinations" featured a mathematician who suspected that his work on Goldbach's conjecture had been stolen.

Any of you up for this challenge?

Understandable!  This problem has never been resolved--and few mathematicians expect it ever will be!

Nichomachus (c. AD 60 – c. 120), a Neopythagorean, wrote of the mystical properties of numbers (such as prime numbers) and helped to explain the “music of the spheres.”

Some people are brilliant at math.

I would not be one of them.

Some brilliant individuals see numbers as colors or objects, I've read.  That enables them to remember long strings of numbers:  they form a picture or story.
