Can the moderators do something about the spam?!

Obviously someone is spamming the board with multiple accounts posting links to illegal movie download sites.

I've been reporting them but they're taking over the board. Do something please!

Clearly your CAPTCHA system is doing nothing to stop them!

The only thing we can do is report it and wait for a while until the admins come back to clean it up.

I know the admins haven't been around much, but the spam is still here....

I emailed them directly through the ask a question section and they asked me to send them the links to spam. I was like ....uh it's EVERYWHERE! (Did they really expect me to send them each individual thread link?)  I also reported every profile and link with the "report this" link. Nuthin!

My next step is to contact CBS.com

I reported several individual posts as well as a few of the users saying that all of their posts were spam.  They're all still there.

Hello, I'm a newbie here, and although this looks like a great site the amount of spam is disappointing (and annoying).  I've already reported about five or six seperate posts and at least one thread, but the stuff doesn't seem to go away.  Is there any more members can do to tackle the problem, rather than simply clicking the "report button?

Thanks again for a great site, and I hope the spam is dealt with ASAP.

Here's what I sent to CBS via their website:

Hello,

I have reported a huge amount of spam and fake users on the StarTrek.com boards previously and nothing has been done.  I have flagged a lot of posts and users who are posting links to illegal download sites and the only response I received was a request to send them the exact links. I feel it's not my job as a user to have to copy and paste every spam link, the moderators should take a look at the site forum and the spam links are easily found.

Many users on StarTrek.com have reported the spam and nothing has been done.  It's shameful that such spam is allowed on the official board of Star Trek. The CAPTCHA system that is so cumbersome to users clearly does nothing to inhibit spamming. Please address the issue of spamming on the StarTrek.com forum ASAP

Thank you

This is just one of the reasons we need to have a couple of senior members here as moderators to help with such obvious problems.

Thing is you can't have "senior members" have moderation power, if by senior you mean people who post a lot.  You need to have employees do it. People who don't post here.  Otherwise it gets personal. I've moderated two boards that were official sites of celebrities and ended up having to "fire" mods because they moderated in terms of what/whom they like rather than what broke TOS. You can have fans moderating a site if they're not subject to an employment agreement of some sort.  All CBS needs to do is park an intern in front of a laptop for an hour a day.

I got this reply from CBS:

Dear StarTrek Fan,

Thank you for bring this to our attention. Our moderators are in the progress of removing all the spam. Please continue to flag posts you may come across. You assistance is much appreciated.

which made me lol because I went to check and saw even MORE spam.  *faceplant*

Yes, I understand.  I've moderated boards before too, and I don't mean someone that's posted a lot...  There would have to be other criteria.  And they'd need to only deal with people who break the TOS.

The problem with the current Star Trek website admins is that they are extremely reactive (mostly absent) and don't know who's who and I've seen them remove people without figuring out what's going on.  They've gotten confused between two people and deleted the wrong people and then refused to reinstate.  Years ago, our admins were much more available and I not only could e-mail them with stuff, but they'd actually reply personally and we kind of got to know each other.  Sadly, those days are gone.

I got locked out when I first joined with no explanation. Turns out that I had registered previously with the same email, which I probably did at one point but forgot.  I don't know why if I'd used my email before it was even allowed to go through wih a new registration and then locked out with no notice. Even the simplest sites usually reject an email if it's in use already.

The CAPTCHA system is obviously useless too, unless the purpose of it is to piss off users.

Either way  I would expect the board  is gonna get worse this weekend, since it's a holiday and they probably have bare minimum staffing.

If that was true, they'd have fixed the problems we've been complaining about for years.

The spam problem seemed to be under control, but Ive noticed a few of them pop up again recently that I have reported. If everybody reports them, maybe the admins wont take so long to check on it. Hopefully it wont get as bad as it was.
