How about a new series with Sulu as the captain of the Excelsior? A continuation if you will after the movie, but update it with new uniforms etc....

you would have to recast it, and the ship would have to be a different class

Personally I'd rather see Riker on the Titan

I'd rather see a new cast, new series, new century.  George Takei, while awesome, is 76.  Too old to be the lead in a series about a starship captain.  There's a certain amount of physical action that he's too old to pull off.

Riker is "meh".  25th century is the way to go.

A new cast would be great too. I think I'd be fine with almost any idea as long as it's in the "real" star trek universe not the new movie universe.

This isn't a new idea. After Star Trek VI there was a whole campaign to do a series based on Excelsior. But it never happened, Next Generation was already in the works, then Gene died. When Paramount approached Berman about doing another Star Trek series, he didn't want to do back to back series involving Starships, so he came up with DS9. Maybe they could have done it instead of doing VOYAGER? Well, there was that one VOYAGER episode, Flashback that takes place on Excelsior, at least. Now it could only be done in fan fiction.

I personally think they could do a series with the cast from the new films, in this world of never ending progress you have to move on. To stay in the past would be a death knell for Star Trek, the movies have created a whole new fan base & they would also watch the series.

That is a good point about doing a series based on the new movies and having an entirely new fan base. We would certainly see more of their five year mission!!

You'd REALLY need a recast there. Frakes is a big long in the tooth for such a dynamic role, eh 2Takes?

Maybe he could play Denny Crane's illegitimate brother in a remake of Boston legal...

If we were talking about a direct spin-off from a pre-existing series then Riker on the Titan please. Then somewhere along the way they could find some of Dr. Soong's lost anroid designs or they could recontruct a positronic brain at the Daystrom institute, upgrade B4 and then he practically becomes Data since he has his memories. If not that then they could for one reason or another have nesscesity to travel to the past, where they meet up with Data and then the need to take him back to the future permanetly convinantly arises. Then we can all put the abomination that was Nemisis behind us.

Seriously though I would prefer an entirely different cast. It would be interesting if the Captian was an alien this time such as a Vulcan or Betazoid, maybe a hybrid of human or some other race mainly raised by the human parents much like Worf if it's a matter of keeping the captain relatable. Oh and how about this, imagine if Starfleet were testing a prototypes modeled after the Borg's transwarp conduates. Maybe this show could be a combination of what goes on in the space station that controls the prototypes and the science vessels that use them to go to uncharted or not very well charted parts of the galaxy....and then one of the characters is a Romulan spy trying to get intel on the prototypes. Oh the wheels in my head are turning now.

Frakes is a bit wide for the role. LOL!  I always thought the change in TNG uniforms from unitards to the two piece deals was directly related to Frakes, Dorn and Burton having a little too much at the craft services table. Spiner and Stewart were the only ones who kept their girlish figures.

A series with the new moves will never take off. A BIG part of the moves and why they were popular was because of the action and special effects. And plus the "reality" that the movies take place in would kina be screwed. I mean think about an episode. no vulcan, no romulus, bald romulans, and it would MOST LIKELY be all action and none of the stuff that us trekkies love in star trek

I'm all for continuing to include all previously involved people in Star Trek even if I despise them. But it needs to be done in a sensible way. Takei and Frakes and all the rest should be able to take part but as different characters. They're too old to have them make sense now. A new show needs a new cast. That cast can include our beloved Star Trek alumni but they and the show would be better served by giving them different parts.

Ethics are arbitrary.
