Ok, I have been a hardcore trekkie since I was a little kid and I have always pondered over the question, "Kirk or Picard?"  So here I ask my fellow trekkies what you think.  My opinion on one of the most debated topics ever on Star Trek is Picard.  I love the tactfullness of Picard and his intellegence in the Captaining position.  In comparison of the series that they star in, I choose The Original Series.  My favorite character in all of Star Trek is Spock, but he serves under Captain Kirk.  I believe that if Picard had Spock, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, and Uhura, then the galaxy would be a much better place.  So I ask what you think trekkies of the world.

I've always been a Kirk fan, myself; but as for the two captains' respective series, I prefer Next Generation.

Both are fantastic, therefore I cannot deside.

Both are great in their time period.  As Picard said to Spock, Kirk practiced more "Cowboy diplomacy".  Kirk would not have been as awesome in the 24th Century....he probably would have started 16 wars before lunch.  And Picard would have gotten the entire crew killed within a week in th 23rd Century.

Each of their leadership methods and practices were appropriate for the time. When people ask "Who would you rather have as captain?" I say "What are the circumstances"

If I'm surrounded by Klingons/Borg/Dominion ships, out numbered and out gunned, I would prefer Kirk over Picard.

If I have an angry Q running around, I'd prefer Picard as I'm sure Kirk would get everyone turned into monkeys.

Kirk was more personable though. From an employee standpoint, I'd rather work for someone with the personality of Kirk than Picard. Picard was too aloof, which even was addressed in All Good Things. on a personal level I need an approachable boss.

I think Capt. Kirk was more physical and energetic, with more charisma, while Capt. Picard was more cerebral and more psychologically skilled.  Both had good crews, but I think the TNG crew had more skills and more balance.

I also cannot decide between Kirk and Picard. I like them both.

I think Kirk's a more interesting character. Everything from his being more hands-on and leading away teams, to the fighting and womanizing, to his moral conviction that made him jump into every situation and do the right thing regardless of the Prime Directive made him more fun to watch, although I do love Picard too.

I think Kirk gets shortchanged alot when people talk about the depth of the character. The Bond comparisons are valid, but what separates him from most other 60's TV heroes was that he was really a tragic figure at his core. All of his major character moments involve him losing something he cares about. He loses Gary Mitchell. He loses Edith Keeler. He loses his brother. He loses the chair. He loses Spock. He loses his son. He loses the original Enterprise for good. He was a womanizer, but all the women he actually cared about were always just outside his grasp (Carol Marcus, Edith, Janice Rand). It's also interesting to note that a good number of those losses were technically self-inflicted, with him being driven by an external force. He killed Gary Mitchell. He stopped Mccoy from saving Edith. He accepted the promotion to Admiral. He destroyed the Enterprise. I think alot of these things are true of Picard too (and Captain Sisko for that matter) but I think it wad fleshed out better with Kirk in the TOS movies. TNG was always more interested in dealing with Picard's aloofness and him as an intellectual figure than in giving him the kind of classic tragic arc that Kirk had.

They are so different, and very much suited to their respective crews. I am tempted to say Picard, but he would not fit at all on the Constitution class. Then I'm tempted to say Kirk, but the reverse is so true!

I will say, Patrick Stewart is probably the better actor, and it was very refreshing in the '80s and '90s to have a space opera show with a more even-handed "lead". William Shatner is very much suited to the tone of TOS.

Honestly I don't have an answer to the classic question.

I tend to prefer a lot of the other characters to the captains.

It is almost hard to compare the two.

But if I had to pick one I would say Kirk.

Picard just didnt speak to me.

Kirk, no contest. He's funny, quick witted, charming, sexy, he has hair...and he's the only person in history to beat the Kobayashi Maru test.

I am a kirkman. I guess that as a captain, Picard is better. But Kirk is more fun and enjoyable, and I see myself as Kirk rather than picard. As far as the series go, I would say TOS by just a bit. I feel that TOS had a certain charm that the spinoffs lacked. While TNG was more scientificly intelligent, I cast my vote off to TOS.

I never saw any real contest; Picard was refined and intelligent; Kirk was impulsive and got dozens (hundreds? I didn't keep count) of "security officers" killed. Kirk was more entertaining, but Picard made a better captain, and a better show. I do agree with earlier statements that each man fit the era he lived in. Objectively, I actually think Sisko was better than Kirk; he managed to walk the line between Kirk and Picard's styles of command.

Picard got quite a few crew members killed himself through meetings with the Borg alone. If you add in First Contact, that's a LOT of Starfleet officers.  Never mind other people who died in other ways. What was the body count at Wolf 359? Kirk never got anyone killed through negligence. Neither did Picard for that matter. When you're dealing with the types of aliens both captains have encountered, people are gonna die.  "Risk is part of the game if you want to sit in that chair."

JJ Abrams is not of the body.
