I decided to do a little analysis of the ST film franchise.  All the numbers presented are adjusted for inflation.  That is, they are in 2013 dollars.  I got all the numbers from the website thenumbers.com.  The inflation factors that I used to compute the adjusted World-Wide gross and budget for each film came from the boxofficemojo.com.

In terms of WW box office you have.

Title                                              Adjusted WW Box Office

Star Trek: The Motion Picture             $439,657,000

Star Trek                                        $410,363,995

Star Trek Into Darkness                     $332,450,586

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home           $277,837,000

Star Trek: First Contact                       $268,500,000

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan             $261,456,800

Star Trek: Generations                        $227,640,000

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock         $205,581,000

Star Trek: Insurrection                         $195,901,400

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country  $183,431,700

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier               $140,400,000

Star Trek: Nemesis                            $90,939,628

Interestingly enough, adjusting for inflation, TMP is still #1 in terms of total box office!  STID isn't doing too bad here, either.  It's run isn't finished yet and it's already in third place in terms of box office.  Unsurprisingly, TFF and NEM are at the bottom.  They're also the worst-reviewed ST films, with rottentomatoes.com rankings of 21 and 38%, indicating that the critics disliked these films as much as the fans did.

Next, the adjusted production budgets.  Here, I also use TWOK's budget as a measure, since it was the cheapest ST film produced.

Title                                Adjusted Production Budget   Budget WRT TWOK

Star Trek Into Darkness                                $190,000,000     5.86202641

Star Trek                                                          $148,960,000     4.595828705

Star Trek: Insurrection                          $116,410,000     3.591571023

Star Trek: The Motion Picture                      $110,705,000     3.415555967

Star Trek: First Contact                          $82,340,000      2.540417129

Star Trek: Nemesis                              $81,060,000       2.500925583

Star Trek: Generations                          $72,086,000       2.22405282

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier                 $60,000,000     1.851166235

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country     $51,111,000     1.576915957

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home               $50,136,000    1.546834506

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock           $42,534,000     1.312291744

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan                $32,412,000     1

As can be seen, STID's budget was over 5.86 times that of TWOK's.  Also, surprisingly, INS's budget was greater than TMP's, which I didn't expect!  So, after the very expensive TMP, the franchise almost ended with a film that was slightly more expensive.  You can clearly see how the budgets, after post-TMP drop, increased almost monotonically.  There were dips after TFF and INS, both of which weren't generally regarded as good films by critics (INS rt.com score is 56%).  Both of those films almost ended the franchise.  The reason why the subsequent budgets of the subsequent films, TUC and NEM, were reduced can be seen in the next table of profits (not taking into account marketing costs and the like).

Title                                                  Adjusted Profit

Star Trek: The Motion Picture                      $328,952,000

Star Trek                                            $261,403,995

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan               $229,044,800

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home              $227,701,000

Star Trek: First Contact                         $186,160,000

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock              $163,047,000

Star Trek: Generations                          $155,554,000

Star Trek Into Darkness                                $142,450,586

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country    $132,320,700

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier                $80,400,000

Star Trek: Insurrection                          $79,491,400

Star Trek: Nemesis                             $9,879,628

TMP is the most profitable of the films, followed by Abrams' ST, and TWOK.  The worst performing films were TFF, INS, and NEM.  It's no wonder that TUC almost didn't happen due to TFF's poor performance.  Similarly, INS's poor profit was the reason it took four years for NEM to be made.  NEM ended up killing the TNG franchise.

I also think TUC is down there on the list due to TFF souring some of the general audience on ST films.  It was a big improvement over TFF though and got the franchise moving back up until INS.  Similarly, I think INS hurt NEM's performance.  Yes, NEM isn't a good movie, but I didn't think it was as terrible as the critics did.

It's easy to see from this, and the previous aggregate scores from rottentomatoes.com that the worst ST films in terms of both reviews and profit were TFF, INS, and NEM, which all made less than $100 million in terms of profit.

Wow. That is weird.

Very interesting stuff. Thanks for digging all this up!
