I had forgotten how bad this film was until I recently saw it again. This is the film that launched Abrams' reimagined Star Trek universe. Since I only saw STID once and went off memory for my review of it, while I can pause, rewind, and rewatch scenes of Star Trek (2009). I don't know if its fair to say it has more plot holes, but I seemed to notice alot more problems.

Problems with Star Trek (2009)

The U.S.S. Kelvin is sent to investigate a lightning storm in space near the neutral zone. The lightning storm is apparently caused by a black hole opening up. Problem: black holes don’t open up, wormholes open up. As the Kelvin arrives on scene we see the Narada (Captain Nero’s Romulan mining vessel) exiting the black hole within seconds. If the Narada’s presence is what triggered an altered timeline, butterfly effect-wise (not the opening up of the black hole), then how does the U.S.S. Kelvin even exist in the first place? How could it have existed before the Narada exited the black hole? Other problems with the Kelvin include its size, its more than twice the size of the original Constitution class vessels, which came later in the original timeline; it has one nacelle that looks like it is powered by liquid fuel, which would make it a thruster, not a warp nacelle. However, we must conclude it is a warp nacelle, because Captain Robau is told that “warp power has been knocked out.”However, all warp powered vessels since the Phoenix have had two warp nacelles, which is said to be necessary to create a stable warp field. If we dismiss this, the following question remains, if a ship can warp on one nacelle, why does it need two 25 years later?

Captain Robau says “Polarize the view screen”, Archer used to say “Polarize the Hull Platting”, the 22nd century’s equivalent of shields. Why does a view screen need polarization? It makes more sense if what he’s referring to is a window, but if he is, it also begs the question of why the window needs to be polarized. My optometrist can create polarized lenses, but in the 23rd century they can’t create a window made with polarized glass?

Captain Robau waits for a large black ship with tentacles to lock weapons on his ship before calling a red alert? Once he’s called a “red alert” he tells tactical to bring the weapons “online.” Does he not know that the red alert automatically brings the weapons online? He’s a Starfleet Captain, right?

Force-fields don’t exist? We see a female crew member sucked out into space following a hull breach.

Captain Robau has no first officer; he makes crew member Kirk, a tactical officer, the Captain?

Why did the Romulans ask Kirk to board a shuttle to their ship, don’t they have transporters? Yes, they do.

Captain Robau boards and exits the shuttle he pilots to the Narada without a communicator or phaser.

Star dates in the Alternate reality are different from Star dates in the previous timeline, yet Nero knows what date Captain Robau is referring to when he gives the Star date from his timeline.

Kirk directs his wife to board medical shuttle 37, but the Kelvin’s shuttle bay doesn’t look like it can hold 37 shuttles.

We’re told autopilot has been disabled, but a few minutes later we see George Kirk plot a collision course using autopilot! If autopilot is working again why doesn’t he beam himself off the ship?

In the last shot before the opening credits we see about twenty shuttles escaping. We are later told by Captain Pike that 800 lives were saved, does that mean there were 40 people aboard each shuttle?

Even if there were 40 shuttles, not twenty, that is still twenty people per shuttle, but we don’t see that many people enter medical shuttle 37.

Kirk is driving a 1965 corvette convertible in the 23rd century, listening to a 20th century rock/rap group? The timeline in Star Trek (2009) includes a cell company called NOKIA, a Beer company called Budweiser, or a rock/rap group called The Beastie Boys that make a song called “Sabotage?” Is Abrams telling us his Star Trek timeline is the same as our own?

Kirk plays car chicken with a police officer in a hover bike, yet we are told later by Captain Pike that Kirk is a genius? Hehehe!

The Vulcan Science Academy is racist against Spock’s mother, yet racism is the emotion of hate directed against a specific race. Why are Vulcan science academics, of all Vulcans, haters? Is science not the dispassionate study of life and nature in all its forms on Vulcan and in the universe? Illogical!

Uhura orders a drink called a Cardassian “sunrise”, the Cardassians were not known in TOS, and why would a militaristic race have a drink called “sunrise?”

Kirk is a drunk, alcoholic pick-up artist who admits to bestiality (having sex with animals).

Starfleet cadets are prejudiced against locals (Cupcake calls Kirk a “townie”), even though they have no reason to be since anyone can join Starfleet. Kirk just shows up at the rendezvous and is accepted.

Enterprise is being built on Earth in Riverside, Iowa, yet, three years later we see it in space dock before it flies off on its “maiden voyage.”

Why is Bones, a Starfleet medical student, at tactical during the Kobayashi Maru simulation test? Because Kirk asked him to be there? Why does Kirk get to decide that? How is he allowed to eat an apple during the test?

Klingon Birds of Prey are referred to as Warbirds.

The Kobayashi Maru is referred to as Spock’s test. It is later revealed that he’s been administering the test at Starfleet Academy for the last four years. Okay, so how does he go from running a simulation test to becoming first officer without any command experience? He also gets to decide which Starfleet cadets serve on which Federation vessels. Isn’t that a big responsibility for someone who has only been running simulation tests at Starfleet Academy? If the purpose of the Kobayashi Maru test is to instill the experience of fear, why is Spock, who is half-Vulcan, qualified to design the test?

Uhura is a prima donna who can’t tolerate being assigned to a starship other than the Enterprise? Spock doesn’t want to assign her to Enterprise because it would appear as favoritism? Does everyone in Starfleet know they are sleeping together?

Why does Bones, a Starfleet medical student, refer to himself as one of the Enterprise’s most senior medical officers? And why does the Starfleet officer overseeing the transfers believe him?

Sulu doesn’t know how to take the Enterprise to warp?

The jump to warp visually looks like the jump to light speed in Star Wars.

Pike doesn’t know the name of his helmsman? He mispronounces Chekov’s name several times.

It takes minutes to get to Vulcan at warp instead of hours and days?

Nero destroys 7 Federation starships like Enterprise in three minutes, which means it took him less than 30 seconds per starship. Hehehe.

A joke is made out of Kirk having an anaphylactic reaction.

Why does Kirk have to remind Pike about something he did his dissertation on?

Captain Pike tells Uhura to relieve the Communications officer. He’s the Captain why doesn’t he do that?

Why does Sulu have to give a countdown as they come out of warp? Cheesy!

After the Narada locks weapons on the Enterprise, Captain Pike doesn’t call a red alert!?

Pike promotes Cadet Kirk to first officer from Cadet due to admiration for his father whom Kirk didn’t know?

Why does Pike ask for officers experienced in hand to hand combat? Did he know Romulan soldiers were going to jump out of the drill? And why aren’t all Starfleet officers getting combat training?

Why isn’t Uhura part of the Away Team? Her knowledge of the Romulan language might be useful in helping to disable the Romulan drill.

Why doesn’t the Away Team burn up in Vulcan’s atmosphere?

Why is Chekov, a helmsman, running calculations like a science officer on the effects of the red matter? While Spock is just sitting in the Captain’s chair giving orders? He is the senior science officer, isn’t he?

Spock’s parents are members of the Vulcan high council? Including Spock’s human mother?

What happened to Vulcan’s defenses?

Why do Starfleet issue chutes suck so badly they can only be used once?

Why can Chekov get a transporter lock onto Kirk and Sulu who are dropping faster than Spock’s mom, but not her?

Why do Kirk and Spock say Spock’s mom was murdered? Wouldn’t any logical person conclude it was a transporter accident that killed her? And if any one person is responsible for her death, it would be Chekov, not Nero.

Why did Chekov countdown the transport? Cheesy!

Why is Kirk bloodthirsty about hunting down Nero, not emotional Spock whose planet was just destroyed by Nero?

What was Classic Trek’s position on Ahab like Captains? Go watch Star Trek: First Contact.

Why is Kirk ejected off the ship instead of placed in the brig? Is Spock trying to kill him?

Why is Delta Vega an ice-planet close enough to Vulcan to make it a moon? In the original timeline Vulcan had no moon; did the altered timeline also affect the locations of planets as well?

The ugly Red Delta Vega beast is frightened off by Spock waving a torch?

In TNG episode “Timescape”, we learn that the Romulans use an artificial quantum singularity, not red matter, to power their engines; this creates an artificial black hole. Is red matter a nod to Star Trek VI?

The TNG film, Nemesis, takes place in 2379, eight years before the Romulus’ Star goes supernova; yet, there is no mention in the film that Romulus’ sun is undergoing a red giant expansion phase, which is the pre-requisite phase to a star going supernova.

Enterprise takes place beginning in 2151, a beagles’ life span is 12-15 years at most, so Archer’s “prize beagle” (is he referring to Porthos?) would be dead by 2166. Yet, Scotty claims he transported it, and Kirk claims he knew that beagle. Is Scotty transporting the corpse of a dead beagle?

Scotty isn’t just a starship engineer in Abrams’ time-line; he’s also a theoretical physicist? If Scotty discovered trans-warp beaming in the 23rd century, then why isn’t it being used in Picard’s 24th century?

The Starfleet regulation about relinquishing command for being “emotionally compromised”, who gets to decide who is and who isn’t emotionally compromised? Are there Betazoids on every ship? Can you think of a regulation that is more likely to be abused than this one? Wasn’t Picard emotionally compromised every time he dealt with the Borg?

Romulan disrupters and Starfleet phaser fire sounds like Star Wars blaster fire.

Why does Kirk think offering to save Nero’s life and that of his crew will help relations with the Romulans? Didn’t Nero say that he and the Empire stand apart?

Why did Kirk fire on the Narada which was already being destroyed by the black-hole singularity?

Enterprise had to launch its warp-cores and detonate them in order to escape and seal the black-hole created by the destruction of Spock’s ship, but Vulcan’s black-hole just magically seals itself up?

Worse, definently worse for Star Trek. STID would make a great Star Wars show and that's where JJ is headed. I've always liked JJ's films but for Star Trek he's missed the boat.

I had some pretty high expectations for this film because he could have done anything with the alternate timeline and what happens....a freakin remake of the Wrath of Khan and a bad one at that.

Hiw many times can I say "I'm a doctor not a....." or strip down and change my close for no apparent reason in a shuttle. Crap, I tell ya...won't be purchasing this latest installment of Jar Jar Binks.

Quick thought:

I think the thing about Kirk having sex with farm animals was a joke. I really, really, really, really, really, don't think we were intended to think he was being serious.

A very bad joke.

The phrase "sex with farm animals" does not belong any way in a Star Trek movie or book.

I'm sure Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly sat around set talking about beastiality.

What's next? Geordie: "Worf that was amazing!, wait, what are you doing to that Targ?"

There would be no end to it.

>Problem: black holes don’t open up, wormholes open up.

>

not really a problem, black holes, singularities and wormholes have all been described  as very similar events before with interchangable defintions

Kelvin even exist in the first place?

the Kelvins exsistence in not depended on the time travel event

Other problems with the Kelvin include its size, its more than twice the size of the original Constitution class vessels, which came later in the original timeline; it has one nacelle that looks like it is powered by liquid fuel, which would make it a thruster, not a warp nacelle. However, we must conclude it is a warp nacelle, because Captain Robau is told that “warp power has been knocked out.”However, all warp powered vessels since the Phoenix have had two warp nacelles, which is said to be necessary to create a stable warp field. If we dismiss this, the following question remains, if a ship can warp on one nacelle, why does it need two 25 years later?

the size of the kelvin is not an issue since we have no idea what kind of missions the ship was built for, have 1 naceell is also not an issue since we have not seen every ship built since the Phonixe

btw, we have een ships with 1 nacelle in the prime timeline, you might want to check your facts before posting such things

We see a female crew member sucked out into space following a hull breach.

you are assuming every ship and in every era is programed/designed the same way, thats not logical

Why did the Romulans ask Kirk to board a shuttle to their ship, don’t they have transporters? Yes, they do.

they didnt ask kirk, and we cant be sure Neros ship had transporters, remember, his ship was a civilan ship

Captain Robau boards and exits the shuttle he pilots to the Narada without a communicator or phaser.

 you are assuming again

Star dates in the Alternate reality are different from Star dates in the previous timeline, yet Nero knows what date Captain Robau is referring to when he gives the Star date from his timeline.

star date systems have changed before, most notably between tos and tng, but also in the ds9 era.Characters never made note of the changes.

In the last shot before the opening credits we see about twenty shuttles escaping. We are later told by Captain Pike that 800 lives were saved, does that mean there were 40 people aboard each shuttle?

it was never said that all 800 lives were onboard the kelvin.

Kirk is driving a 1965 corvette convertible in the 23rd century, listening to a 20th century rock/rap group? The timeline in Star Trek (2009) includes a cell company called NOKIA, a Beer company called Budweiser, or a rock/rap group called The Beastie Boys that make a song called “Sabotage?” Is Abrams telling us his Star Trek timeline is the same as our own?

hasnt that always been the intentuon since TOS?

The Vulcan Science Academy is racist against Spock’s mother, yet racism is the emotion of hate directed against a specific race. Why are Vulcan science academics, of all Vulcans, haters? Is science not the dispassionate study of life and nature in all its forms on Vulcan and in the universe? Illogical!

not the first time we have seen that from vulcans

Uhura orders a drink called a Cardassian “sunrise”, the Cardassians were not known in TOS, and why would a militaristic race have a drink called “sunrise?”

We saw cardassian in Archers era, and they werent always a miitary culture.........you really need to do some research

Kirk is a drunk, alcoholic pick-up artist who admits to bestiality (having sex with animals).

please explain

Enterprise is being built on Earth in Riverside, Iowa, yet, three years later we see it in space dock before it flies off on its “maiden voyage.”

 ad whats the problem?

Why is Bones, a Starfleet medical student, at tactical during the Kobayashi Maru simulation test? Because Kirk asked him to be there? Why does Kirk get to decide that?

captains are allowed to pick their senior bridge crew

Klingon Birds of Prey are referred to as Warbirds.

those were battle crusers, and the same was done in Archers era

The Kobayashi Maru is referred to as Spock’s test. It is later revealed that he’s been administering the test at Starfleet Academy for the last four years. Okay, so how does he go from running a simulation test to becoming first officer without any command experience? He also gets to decide which Starfleet cadets serve on which Federation vessels. Isn’t that a big responsibility for someone who has only been running simulation tests at Starfleet Academy? If the purpose of the Kobayashi Maru test is to instill the experience of fear, why is Spock, who is half-Vulcan, qualified to design the test?

he was Pikes assistant, seems he would be allowed some if not all of those things

Why does Bones, a Starfleet medical student, refer to himself as one of the Enterprise’s most senior medical officers? And why does the Starfleet officer overseeing the transfers believe him?

he wasnt a starfleet medical studant, he was already a doctor for years, now looking to be a doctor for starfleet.

Sulu doesn’t know how to take the Enterprise to warp?

it was suoposed to be a joke

Nero destroys 7 Federation starships like Enterprise in three minutes, which means it took him less than 30 seconds per starship. Hehehe.

they never said how long the full trip would take

Why does Kirk have to remind Pike about something he did his dissertation on?

its been almost 20 years, not many would have made such a connection after so long

Captain Pike tells Uhura to relieve the Communications officer. He’s the Captain why doesn’t he do that?

he wasnt telling her to tell the other guy, he was standing right there after all

Pike promotes Cadet Kirk to first officer from Cadet due to admiration for his father whom Kirk didn’t know?

Kirks rank in the film was lieutent

Spock’s parents are members of the Vulcan high council? Including Spock’s human mother?

yes, and married to a hi ranking vulcan

What happened to Vulcan’s defenses?

Nero took them out

Why can Chekov get a transporter lock onto Kirk and Sulu who are dropping faster than Spock’s mom, but not her?

he had more time with Kirk and Sulu

Why do Kirk and Spock say Spock’s mom was murdered? Wouldn’t any logical person conclude it was a transporter accident that killed her? And if any one person is responsible for her death, it would be Chekov, not Nero.

dead wrong.Nero caused the events to happen, for the need to transport out in such a dangerour situation.ntent follows the bulet

Nero is to blame

Why is Delta Vega an ice-planet close enough to Vulcan to make it a moon? In the original timeline Vulcan had no moon; did the altered timeline also affect the locations of planets as well?

did you ever see the first film, Vulcan had a sister planet like romulos had remus

The TNG film, Nemesis, takes place in 2379, eight years before the Romulus’ Star goes supernova; yet, there is no mention in the film that Romulus’ sun is undergoing a red giant expansion phase, which is the pre-requisite phase to a star going supernova.

they never said it was the romulan sun that exploded. It was the hobis star, a star in a system near romulos.

A]you are assuming its the sae dog. Many dog lovers stick to 1 breed, so it could be his original dogs grandchild.

B]human life spands have been made longer, maybe they learned to do the same for dogs

Scotty isn’t just a starship engineer in Abrams’ time-line; he’s also a theoretical physicist? If Scotty discovered trans-warp beaming in the 23rd century, then why isn’t it being used in Picard’s 24th century

what makes you think he dicovered it in the 23rd century originally?

Remember, Spock Prime is from the 24th cenury [Picards era] and Scotty is still arround, so maybe he figured out the trick in he 24th century after the events of nemisis.

Why does Kirk think offering to save Nero’s life and that of his crew will help relations with the Romulans? Didn’t Nero say that he and the Empire stand apart?

Kirk wasnt there when nero said that

Why did Kirk fire on the Narada which was already being destroyed by the black-hole singularity?

to be sure it was destroyed and not travel to an other pint in time

Enterprise had to launch its warp-cores and detonate them in order to escape and seal the black-hole created by the destruction of Spock’s ship, but Vulcan’s black-hole just magically seals itself up?

Vulcans black-hole seals itself up by consuming all the matter of Vulcan

Stovokor,

1. black holes and wormholes are not interchangable, at least not in Trek. Wormholes are used to travel through space and time, they open and close, some are stable like DS9 wormhole, others are not. Nero and his crew seemed to be able to predict when Spock would come through, as in stable wormhole. Don't defend sloppy writing. The writers could have easily made this a wormhole. Nothing escapes from a black hole, blackholes in Trek are not used to travel through time prior to ST09

2. This is news to me, Kelvin's existence isn't dependent on the time changes?

3. Okay, the one nacelle thing. I think there was a one nacelle vehicle in the background during one of the DS9 battles, but that doesn't make it warp capable. About its size, okay, you have a point. I think it was a reconaissance vessel. But we did go from bigger to smaller ships in the 24th century. VOYAGER was smaller than Enterprise-D, and Defiant was also exceptionally smaller.

4. I misposted about Kirk, I meant Robau, and yes they had transporters. Spock says he was transported to the surface of Delta Vega.

5. Robau without a communicator and phaser is implied, we dont see him below the waist after he exits the shuttle, but we don't see him strap anything one before sitting down at the console.

6. You're really gonna argue Pike didn't mean what he said when he said 800 lives we saved?

7. When else did we see racist Vulcan science academics?

8. Cardassians in Archer's era, when? I supposed the Alternate changes could explain Cardassians.

9.  Cadet Kirk isn't a Captain, just a training student. What about the apple?

10. Okay, the same error was made on Enterprise in the pilot, but the context made Warbirds sound better.

11. You're really going out on a limb trying to defend the poor writing on this. Pike's assistant? Where does that come from?

12. If Bones was one of Enterprise's most senior medical officers, why is he dressed like a Cadet, and why does he scramble like the rest of the cadets at Hanger 1? Are you inventing this as you go along Stovokor? What sources for what you are alleging? Just speculation I imagine.

13. Yes, Nero destroyed 7 Federation starships in 3 minutes, go rewatch ST09, Enterprise was delayed for 3 minutes, its in Chekov's shipwide announcement.

14. Go rewatch ST09, Pike is talking to Uhura.

15. You're making excuses for poor writing, if Chekov could save Kirk and Sulu, he should have been able to save Spock's mom

16. Romulus is in a different star system, you're point?

17. The Hobis star's supernova would take longer than Romulus' sun to reach Romulus, plus there is an image of the sun exploding near the planet.

18. Archer's prize beagle implies it was Archer's dog, Archer only had one dog we know of, Porthos.

19. If Kirk wasn't there, I don't remember, why didn't Spock correct him?

20. The ship was getting torn apart! Kirk is just bloodthirsty!

>Stovokor,

>1. black holes and wormholes are not interchangable, at least not in Trek.

Perhaps you need gto do some research in Trek.Black holes, singularities and wormholes have been used as interchangasble descriptions in a number of trek stories.

I'm not saying it makes sense, but it is how they were used from time to time

Wormholes are used to travel through space and time,

and Blackholes have done the same in Trek.......or have you forgoton V'Ger?

2. This is news to me, Kelvin's existence isn't dependent on the time changes?

No its not......and I dont see how its news to you.

Remember, Nero traveled to the year 2233, before that it was the prime timeline.....so neros actions did not create the Kelvin.

We saw 1 nacelle ships in TNG The Best of both Worlds as well and in view screans in the TOS Movie era.At least 1 was designated a "DESTROYER".Such a ship would be warp capable.

As to ther Kelvins size, if we knew what missions it was designed for we could come to a better answer............my guess is that it was a colonly transport ship.

4. I misposted about Kirk, I meant Robau, and yes they had transporters. Spock says he was transported to the surface of Delta Vega.

nice catch.

5. Robau without a communicator and phaser is implied, we dont see him below the waist after he exits the shuttle, but we don't see him strap anything one before sitting down at the console.

even if he went with out both I dont see a problem. He likely knew he was surrendering.

6. You're really gonna argue Pike didn't mean what he said when he said 800 lives we saved?

Are you really going to tell me that your so closed minded that you cant imagine some other possible explanation?

heres 1 that fits with my theroy on the Kelvins size.............if the kelvin was designed to be a colonly transport ship, therm maybe it was part of a convoy, which they masy have been excorting and left in a near by system when they were deverted to the even in question.

if so, GKirks actions would have been seen as saving the convoy from being Neros next target.

7. When else did we see racist Vulcan science academics?

ENTERPRISE

8. Cardassians in Archer's era, when? I supposed the Alternate changes could explain Cardassians.

ENT; Dead Stop, the one with the weird repair station, I also recall them being mention in at least 2 other episodes. And theres no need to explkain it since first contact with the cardssians was never given a date.

9.  Cadet Kirk isn't a Captain, just a training student. What about the apple?

Kirk was captain for that training session, the test was designed to test his skills as a captain, choosing his bridge crew also reqwuires skill and good judgement. So I'm sure those skills were being tested too.

The Apple, we have see other captains consume things on the bridge, so I dont see an issue here.

10. Okay, the same error was made on Enterprise in the pilot, but the context made Warbirds sound better.

like I said, it was battle crusers, and I dont see an era in its use.

11. You're really going out on a limb trying to defend the poor writing on this. Pike's assistant? Where does that come from?

Kirk was part of Pikes class, Spock was designing programs for said class, he ended up pikes first officer.

I see no stretch in coming to that conclusion

12. If Bones was one of Enterprise's most senior medical officers, why is he dressed like a Cadet, and why does he scramble like the rest of the cadets at Hanger 1? Are you inventing this as you go along Stovokor? What sources for what you are alleging? Just speculation I imagine.

Because he was a doctor, not a starfeet officer. He joined the fleet at the same time Kirk did, so he was a cadet.

being the most senior medical officer is likely due to his years as a doctor.Sources are from the film

13. Yes, Nero destroyed 7 Federation starships in 3 minutes, go rewatch ST09, Enterprise was delayed for 3 minutes, its in Chekov's shipwide announcement.

you might need to re-watch the film.-

By the time Checkov made that announcement, the Enterprise made it to full speed, McCoy was able to change his uniform, Kirk woke up from being sedated from likely at least a short enough for his hands to swell as we saw.

So we dont know exactly how much time passed between when the others ships left space doc and Checkovs statement.

14. Go rewatch ST09, Pike is talking to Uhura.

again, you need to rewatcvh the film not me,

he wasnt telling her to tell the other guy, he was standing right there because Pike told him to start monerering Vulcasn communication, when the guy said he cant tell the difference between Vulcan and Romnulkan, he asked Uhura if she could, she said yes, and he gave the order infrount of both of them.

15. You're making excuses for poor writing, if Chekov could save Kirk and Sulu, he should have been able to save Spock's mom

your making assumptions to try and make something out of nothing.Fact is when he beemed Kirk and Sulu he was only trying tyo beem 2 tarfets falling at 1 speed.

when trying for Spocks mom, he was trying to beem multible targets from the surface of a imploding planet when 1 target fell out of range at a great speed.

16. Romulus is in a different star system, you're point?

17. The Hobis star's supernova would take longer than Romulus' sun to reach Romulus,

whats your point. We were never tool exactly how much time passed.

plus there is an image of the sun exploding near the planet.

near "A" planet

18. Archer's prize beagle implies it was Archer's dog, Archer only had one dog we know of, Porthos.

Right...........Archer's prize beagle implies it was Archer's dog, Archer only had one dog we know of, Porthos..................and what about what we dont know?

If Porthos died he may have gotton an other beagle.

My brother is on his 5th Staffordshire Bull Terrier

19. If Kirk wasn't there, I don't remember, why didn't Spock correct him?

Spock was still dealing with his hsate, but I was incorrect, Kirk was there at the time.

20. The ship was getting torn apart! Kirk is just bloodthirsty!

he didnt know if the ship could still survive long enough to travel in time asgain.

Concerning Star Wars (which JJ admits  to have always liked more the Star Trek)  JJ. Abrams was quoted saying  "I think the key to moving forward on something like this is honoring but not revering what came before."

Hmm...

Revere \Re*vere"\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Revered; p. pr. & vb.

   n. Revering.] [L. revereri; pref. re- re- + vereri to fear,

perh. akin to E. wary: cf. F. r['e]v['e]rer.]

To regard with reverence, or profound respect and affection,

mingled with awe or fear; to venerate; to reverence; to honor

   in estimation.

This spells out his main problem in the Star Trek movies he has made. He wants to "honor" these icons of movie and TV history, he just does not want to "Respect" or Honor"  what they are, the stories behind them, the creators that made them, nor the fans that love them.

Does JJ make entertaining movies..sure. But they are shallow independent films. They are meant to make as much sense as LOST did have no solid plot and zero regard for science possibilities.

We all know Star Trek is science fiction, not science fact. But Star Trek has always tried to base most of its technoldgey in science fact and also keep with the overall cannon of past films/shows.

If JJ wanted to rewrite Star Trek in hi own image he should of made an Mirror Universe films. He would of done great. Perhaps make a future Star Trek, say aother 100 years after STNG. Or make a movie of of a book spin off, say Peter David's New Frontier.

But you have to be able to respect the classics.

A few things:

We don't know if emergency shields for hull breaches was standard equipment on Starfleet ships in 2233. The Enterprise didn't have any in 2259, for that matter, as evidence with its battle against the Vengeance.

Perhaps the Kelvin's first officer was incapacitated or killed in the opening salvo. There isn't enough information given to explain why George Kirk was given command. Only that Captain Robau needed a replacement.

The romulans had transporters, but it might be that the Kelvin's crew was unwilling to lower their shields.

Its probable to think that if Captain Robau did equip a phaser and communicator, they were confiscated upon boarding the Narada. Its pretty standard to disarm prisoners in one's custody.

The date of first contact with the Cardassians has never been established. We don't even know if it is a native Cardassian drink, or just a name given to a non-Cardassian drink.

See, Uhura was giving Kirk a hard time, and he turned her bestiality remark around into a joke. It called a comeback. Its a real thing.

There's nothing inconsistent with the Enterprise built planet side, then seen three years later moored at spacedock. The ship has been shown to have atmospheric and submersible capabilities. Once construction was complete and the ship was operational, it flew to spacedock for further testing and outfitting. Pretty simple.

There is no information that says Spock only spent his time in Starfleet programming the test, or that his Starfleet career up to that point was only four years. He very well may have had a variety of postings on ships prior to events in the movies. And I believe it is implied.

Kirk and Sulu were in free fall far longer that Spock's mother, giving Chekov much more time to manually lock on and beam them out. It is clearly implied he did not have that luxury when attempting it again when she was being beamed out.

Chekov is responsible for her death?! No! Nero, the guy that destroyed the planet she was on killed her! And the six billion other people on Vulcan! Jesus! This needs explained??

Forget it.

I'm done...
