Easy to miss a key point, making the rest of the story seem hodge podge.

STID provided plots about as complex as a block of cheese.

I agree with this point very well. The same thing happened in Trek 09, which I maintain has a more complex story than is recognized.

It makes me sad that the movie gets filed under "mindless action flick" and that's it. There is so much more there.

Edit: It should be noted that Red Letter Media liked Trek 09

I like the RLM guy. Have watched ther stuff for as long as they've been around.

But I think they seriously missed the boat on this one.

ST09 for all intents and purposed didn't have a story.

25 years and still holding a grudge? ... without going to or calling Romulus?

But STID has a deep plot that speaks to the current political situation.

It shouldn't be thrown in with the Iron Man III's of the world.

fireproof78,

To its credit Star Trek (2009) is more sci-fi than STID, although it is bad sci-fi and bad Star Trek. The only sci-fi in STID is the setting, which is pretty sad for a Star Trek film.

I mean this with sincerity when I ask this question but how is Trek 09 bad scifi and bad Trek?

The whole idea is to take Trek a new direction in terms of character and world development.

But there interpretation of the plot is wrong.

I'm with you here. I think that if it is shiny and full of explosions in modern cinema, then there is the expectation that the plot is subpar. This is not a slight against ANYONE here-this is the general attitude of the movie going aduience, and Hollywood insiders.

In my opinion, a movie can have shiny explosions and have a decent plot. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Your mileage will vary though

you mean "their" interpretation of the plot is wrong...you also forgot to add "in my opinion"

an interpretation can't be wrong, it's subjective.

and there's no need to insult them because you disagree with them

I also mean this with complete sincerity. If the point is to take Trek in a new direction, why rehash villians and plot points?
