Never regret starting a discussion like this. Conversations like this need to take place. Hell, I wish Creation would start a panel about this at conventions.  We need to talk about this. To educate people about how even the slightest comment can effect a person.  How simply saying "I don't want to see gays in Star Trek" can hurt others to their core.  Comments like that are what cause pain and suffering.

Prayers For Bobby never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Sigourney Weaver is wonderful in it.  Her final speech, when she implores people to think before they speak out against homosexuals because "a child is listening" is one of the most moving scenes I have ever watched.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=266q7aRCfFg   I also urge everyone to watch the movie.

DriaLynn, I hope that some day the two things you are are no longer "against each other". I believe that the only thing that is against your sexual orientation is other people, not your god. I hope that you find acceptance and love everywhere you go.  I hope that you know that you are wonderful exactly how you are and no one has the right to judge you but your god.  And I believe that any god who created you loves you as you are and you are exactly how they meant you to be. You are perfect and glorious just as you are.

Thank you very much! I know God loves me and he loves everyone, some people will preach hate and hell but God does not want that! He wants us all to love one another and leave the judgments to him! "Faith, hope, and love, the greatest of these is love"

And that movie has helped me more than anything I am still trying to get my mom to watch it though she has come a very long way.

No there is not that statement doesn't appear anywhere in the constitution.  It is stated in the Declaration of Independence and most of the founders supported religous freedom.  There is no way to fully seperate a person from their relgious beliefs with out banning all religon which would be in violation of the first amendment.  This is why I am opposed to various state constitution that ban atheist from holding office.  Should there be a gay character in Star Trek yes but I want them to be a great character who happens to be gay not just someone they throw in to meet some political quota.  This is why I was disappointed with Voyager and Enterprise they had potentially great characters that they just failed to fully develop I don't want to see that with a gay character that people will make fun of for years

Why should there be a pronounced esesence of gay actors on Star TreK. Gays are a product or religion and a monetary based system of control to make money.....Slavery.

Since the Federation has liquidated the notion of religiously dominated nations and monetary build-up then people being gay in the Star Trek Universe would be irrelevant because skills and personality not acting like something you are not is the mentality of the Federation.

I doubt that gays would be present in the Federation either as gays are attention seekers through dramatic contraversay involving acclimation of wealth.

If there would be gays in the Federation they would be viewed as any other member of Star Fleet.

But why are gays gay if not only to gain attention because they lack it elsewhere?

George Takei is gay but so what. I don't have to wake up next to him every morning so why should I care if he is gay or not.

I forgot where the comment about humans in Trek being atheists is, but I was watching DS9 "far beyond the stars" and at the end Sisco's fathe quotes the bible, so they're not all atheists.

The before mentioned DS9-episode "rejoined" actually offers an insight into the seemingly acepted union of same sex couples. Sure, we have a background where the two women used to be husband and wife, still there is no hint of their union being unrighteous or even unnatural for more than that Trill society forbids the re-union of former symbionts. Being gay in form of same sex attraction is handled a the most natural thing. Still, it is only one episode that does not carry the general sentiment. The Enterprise D is set up to be a ship that holds entire families, so that officers can lead a family life as well. By the general tone one might believe that it is a Christian Settlership in search for the new world where gays have no place. One might still say that the founders are bisexual creatures thus making DS9 the exeption, since the female founder played by Salome Jens explains Odo the he/she had just taken a suiting form to not exalterate Odo. The concept of genders seems to fall out of play for the founders, even if the thread isn´t followed through. I agree with the opinions that demask homophobia as a vile form of intolerance and disrespect. Star Trek would be a forum to make homophobia a core theme, still I am glad that the new syfy series "Defiance" has taken up the challenge. I find myself positively surprised by that series. Regarding the new movies, even if I haven´t seen it, I´m guessing in causa emotional depth and social criticism "Broke Back Mountain" superates them by lenghts.

Im might add that I myself was as a teenager totally homophobic. I think shows like Star Trek were able to let me see beyond the curtain of intolerance, hatred and fear. I strongly disagree with the opinion that movies are not supossed to bear any message and they are just plain fun-carriers. I welcome the deconstruction of DOMA and am deeply saddened that France has offerd such a poor canvas of itself ... let´s just mention that in Russia now a law has passed making it a criminal act to talk about homosexuality while children are present. The times we live in ... give us individual possibilities to rise up against injustice. "Infinite variations in infinite forms" ... (give me the correct citation please)
