The problems with making a new Star Trek series

We've been lacking a new Star Trek series for 8 almost 9 years now, but after the latest success of JJ Abrams' films I've noticed an increased in questions and discussions about a new series.

There are a few problems with making a new series, one of which is the dislike fans felt towards Voyager and Enterprise which on the whole weren't very successful. There are many sites that go into detail on why they dislike these shows, so I'm not going to go too much into it.

The biggest problem however is the lack of original ideas that can be generated from previous series. The crews of different ships have gone back in time, been captured by powerful anomalies, battled Klingons and Romulans so many times that it would be difficult to come up with any more of those kinds of episodes without recycling old TNG or original series plotlines.

The real lack of original ideas come when you get to the crew though.
Any Vulcan starfleet officors will just become Spock, Tuvok or T'Pol. Any Klingon officors will become Worf or Torres. Any kids will resemble Jake, Nog, Alexander or (shudder) Wesley.
Not to mention the "outsider" that has cropped up in every series: Spock, Data, Worf, Neelix, Seven, Odo... the list goes on.

So, to conclude, the real problem with a new Star Trek series is just that almost all of the ideas of characters and plots have already been done.

How about a series centered on a Pakled ship going round the galaxy finding things that make them go?

I don't know, Star Trek does have a sort of formula to it, but it has broken out of that formula before - with Deep Space Nine.

I think a new series needs to be far enough in the future to distance itself from what has come before, and give the writers room to breathe. Maybe on a transwarp ship exploring deep in uncharted territory, or on a Federation hospital ship.

I would rate the chance of a new series coming soon at about 50/50, but that has little to do with an apparent lack of usable material. Star Trek so far has suggested a lot of possible storylines that could be used. Who knew that so much could be gotten from something as simple as an old space station, for example? You see all these starbases, and until DS9 nothing really looked at them in a significant amount of detail. Paramount/CBS could go back to the starship formula, or easily hone in on some other aspect of the Federation that has been hinted at but not shown in detail. Is there going to be resettlement of the old Maquis colonies? What problems could possibly arise from that? Look at how much the books were able to generate from an engineering ship, for fraks sake! Aside from that, there is no harm whatsoever in repeating archetypes (like the "outsiders" who are still very easily distinguishable from each other.) Given that fact, it seems a very poor basis on which to write off the potential of a new series.

The problems with making a new Trek series... Paramount doesn't want to step on little JJ's toes because he's making them money.  Give me a break.  The dude admitted he's not into Star Trek... Star Wars was his sci-fi.  Bring back Roddenberry's vision of space exploration and drop this Abrams action-packed nonsense.  Such a shame Paramount ditched the loyal fans for new blood.  MOST ILLOGICAL.

and yet a good number of the episodes were basic retellings of TNG episodes.

dont get me wrong, DS9 was my fav of all treks, but not every idea they had was original.

I think it would be interesting to see life in the galaxy from the perspective of people other than Starfleet officers. While Starfleet is an important part of the Federation, it is only one facet. The Federation is a huge civilization, to say nothing of the galactic community as a whole. There is a lot of story potential out there.

Not going to have a new show any time soon. I was listening to a radio show the other night and mentioned on the show by a guest he says that the making of any new TV series is on break for awhile till you get some fresh ideas I guess. Probably in 14 years?

All they really need to start with is a decent budget for set-building and a few good ideas. The rest will come along naturally.

1) They couldn't afford the actors

2) That would just be TOS 2.0... the well has run dry on stories for a show like that.

I disagree ...

DS9 started out differently, to be sure,
but when that wasn't to the public's
liking, now they have to have a starship
(the Defiant), gotta bring Worf onboard,
gotta have Sisko become Captain ... on
and on. This franchise does not have the
cojones to venture too far from formula.
Even the successful reboot relies on it ...

@averagewelshtrekkie. There are endless scenarios to me. 1. There can be renegade dissatisfied STAR TREK officers and crew members who desire to travel separate of STARFLEET and just want to explore weary after so many wars. Of course already in place and set up is a new earth-like world that is really, really `far, far away` operating for decades. The WARP-SPEED travel has increased exponentially capable to WARP-50(last I checked it was WARP-13 "ALL GOOD THINGS". All of this is unknown to STARFLEET's past and present enemies including the BORG. The new engines would be able to absorb photon torpedo's energy by instantly converting the power to protect the Enterprise. Also there would always be fleets of supply ships summond at anytime as sort of like a 'moving supply depot`. Make any sense?

There are lots of ideas - writers have imaginations that create new, wonder possibile worlds / missions.  We can only look at the books to see that.

But I would like to see a new series.  Maybe using a Wells Class ship?
