Can anyone tell me if they added Uhura's rank.....somewhere?

Seriously, the material of the new uniforms is the only thing I love about the reboot.  I just want long sleeves and rank.

I don't think so. But to be honest I wasn't really looking. I'm seeing it a 2nd time tomorrow so I'll make sure to look.

I wish they sold that material in bolts.  I'm tempted to buy a few xxl male costumes and have a standard TOS era female uniform made from that material.  I seriously love it.

In Abrams' sexist universe, woman don't need ranks, all they need is mini skirts

Greatness comes to those who really want to do anything to get it.

This post appears to be about cloth. Maybe it would be better for us all if we just let this kind of thing rest.

I just saw some high resolution stills.  Still no rank. Frak JJ Abrams. Seriously, what the hell?  In ALL Star Treks, if you don't know a person's name you adress them by rank.   Say you meet someone you don't know you say "Hello, Commander" or whatever.  Run into NuUhura?
"Helloooooo..." (looks for rank) "......er...Sparkly Earrings"

Is this something like Deanna Troi? The person that loved to hang out next to Captain Picard on the bridge in what was basically casual wear with no indication of rank?

Well although Troi was a Starfleet officer, she was ship's counselor, and was addressed as such. She wasn't really adressed by her rank  (unless maybe Jellico did, I don't remember offhand). I think her casual wear was to make patients and those she worked with feel more comfortable with her, since their mental wellbeing was her main duty.  The informality was necessary, especially since she counseled crew in their off hours. Who wants to see a shrink in a uniform?

Uhura, however, should be wearing a rank.

Troi was a Starfleet officer. While performing her duties on the bridge or interacting with new species for first Contact she should be in a standard uniform that displays her rank. You're applying a double standard here.

There's no absolutely no double standard. It's apples and oranges. With 75 years between show time periods, things change. Things are different in TNG than TOS or NuTrek.  In TOS they adhered to a more military type protcol and everyone on board was a member of Starfleet, so everyone was in uniform.  Uniforms were required and rank should be as well. So Uhura and NuUhura should have rank.

In TNG, Starfleet had evolved.  They also had families on board, kids and non Starfleet spouses. The ship was much more of a small community. Troi not only serves officers, but familes.  If she has to counsel a child, then a uniform would probably be intimidating.  She's only on the bridge for certain events. She has a full day serving the crew. She doesn't serve her shift all day on the bridge. We only see her on the bridge because, obviously, episodes are when the action happen. But she's also a therapist with a practice.

And who's to say a new species would even recognize what a uniform is?  And changing every time she had to go somewhere that would be ridiculous.

Finally, in TNG, Troi's casual wear was at the Captain's discretion, which is why Jellico made her wear a uniform when Picard allowed her more freedom as a counselor and not an officer. (For the record, I was at a convention when Marina Sirtis expressed that she was happy Troi was in a uniform.) But I can see why they kept her in casual clothing.

They also allowed Wesley to pilot  the ship wearing fabulous sweaters.

Besides, I think it diminishes NuUhura's role as an officer to simply have no rank because it looks cute. She's a lieutenant and should be allowed to display her rank.

Wesley only wore his fabulous sweater in the first season.  When he was piloting the ship he had on a cadets uniform.  Nice try.  It's ridiculous to argue that Troi should not have been wearing a uniform.  Obviously they dressed her in a way that would show off her boobs.  There was no other motivation.

If this is the kind of thing that detracts from the enjoyment of a movie...I don't quite know what to think about that. Frankly, I'm not looking at "rank insignia" when I'm watching a Star Trek movie.

different strokes I guess.

Oh look, it's Sparks McGee piloting the ship in a fabulous sweater:

Again, apples and oranges.  There is no "try" here. You cannot compare the practices of the 23rd Century to the 24th.

Yes, Troi was eye candy, but she could have been just as seductive in one of the season 1  skin tight jumpsuits. And she was a counselor, so every reason I gave falls in place with her duties as such.

And you'd think that a movie in 2013 would be a little more progressive about that kind of thing. I don't know why people have such a hard time admitting to any error in the new movie.

She needs rank.

It's not apples and oranges at all. We can most certainly compare the practices of the Federation from two different time periods as the fundamental philosophies and mission did not change. As far as which one was more of a military style organization the Enterprise may have tried to avoid combat more than the TOS Enterprise did but Starfleet most definitely had a greater military role by the time TNG happened.

Also thanks for showing off Wesley on the bridge in a sweet sweater. Your support for Uhura not wearing rank by showing people hanging out in their pajamas and casual wear on the bridge of Starfleet's most powerful ship is appreciated.

It's stuff like this that makes it impossible to have any sort of real dialogue about the JJ's movies.  ZOMG!!! something happened in this movie that has happened over and over again in trek before but this time its somehow so. much. worse.  ZOMG!!! someone's hair is parted on the wrong side.  ZIMG!! its all wrong wrong wrong!!!  There was actually a thread here once about some actors eyes being the wrong colour and how this PROVED JJ hated Trek.

Were these movies flawless?  of course not.  Yet we can never have a reasonable discussion about what might actually be wrong in these movies, or right, because of these types of posts that nitpick and blow out of proportion such tiny details that were perfectly acceptable before.
