Anyone know of any good ones?

There are a lot to choose from.  When I talk to people about joining a fleet, I ask them what they're looking for.  Are they looking for a huge one or small or something in between.  Are they looking for Role Playing or something in particular?  Are they looking for voice communications?  Are they looking to contribute or just be one of the group?

I don't believe in a one size fits all.  Our fleet (Frontier Fleet) is small, but those of us that are active have gotten us to a Tier 3 starbase and a Tier 2 embassy as well as have completed all the special projects.  We have our own forum and voice communications.  Some of our members are even writing a script for an episode.

I think its time for me to join one but aside from when I see people recruiting for one I don't really know enough about what you do in one.

And what's the deal with random fleet invites? I always decline those.

As Bam-Bam said, it all depends on what you're looking for.

Some fleets are all about STFs, others are so casual you probably wouldn't even notice that you're in a fleet except the free uniform slot.  Some are pushing 500... but most have 5 or fewer.

Ours (I'm in Frontier with Bam-Bam) is intended to be more of a "Trek simulator" with a fair amount of role-play and respect for Trek canon/history/lore... rather than an "MMO Clan" that's all about looting PvE and collecting kill accolades in PvP.

But... no good plan goes unpunished.  While we were successful briefly, real-life got in the way, and our 50-man fleet of Trek-loving role-players slowly turned into 5 guys trying to make it work with 45 inactive "ghosts".  However, we have been brainstorming on ways to rebuild.

I hate the blind invites too - thats rude.  That's just people trying to build a huge fleet without any substance.

So what are the benefits? Are there more missions or something? I hear you can do things to get a new ship too. SOrry for all the questions, as long as I've played you'd think I'd know the answers but I just haven't done that part of the game yet.

Please, ask the questions.

Yes, there are additional missions - if you take a look at the PvE queue, look for missions that reward Fleet Marks.

And yes, being part of a fleet does get you additional benefits, depending on the level of the fleet.  You can get get Advanced and elite fleet equipment as well as special consoles.

Also, if you find a fleet that does what you like doing, they can help you accomplish your goals. It's also nice to have a group of people that are familiar with you and know how best to answer your questions if you have any.

Another thing I've wondered about is people who make fleets but just for themselves. I've helped a couple of people do that but I don't know why they do it.

They usually do it just so they have their own extra bank.  Each fleet gets their own fleet bank and can add multiple repositories.

I definitely like the idea of join some sort of Role-play fleet, especially as a beginner, it is what I have been looking forward to.

If you're new to the game, I suggest finding a fleet that actually likes helping new players.  There are several fleets that only want people that have been playing quite a while.  I always suggest interviewing multiple fleets and then choosing the best fleet for your needs.

Thanks for the advice I am looking forward to getting into Star Trek Online in the near future, possibly starting this weekend.
