The Harryhausen family announced his death
via Twitter and Facebook on May 7, 2013.
The Mirror quoted Harryhausen's website,
saying his "influence on today’s film makers
was enormous, with luminaries; Steven Spielberg,
James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas,
John Landis and the UK's own Nick Park have
cited Harryhausen as being the man whose work
inspired their own creations."

In all honesty my first reaction to this was to be surprised that he was still alive.

But Ray Harryhausen was a great influence on sci-fi and fantasy FX -- if not directly, then through his inspiration -- even today.

I loved watching Jason & the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans as a kid.

Also Pixar's tribute in Monsters Inc.

His Jason And The Argonauts, and the ancient dinosaurs in a couple of movies, really made those films at the time!  He was a truly innovative creator, and he will long be remembered for his amazing contributions.
