I've been trying to join Star Trek simms for a while now, but I find myself getting stuck on the simplest things. I was hoping maybe some experienced rpers could help me out.
I can't seem to figure out the different kinds of rp that exist. I've never even tried a play-by-email, but what I heard sounded rather complicated. Since I'm used to forums with segregated areas of the ship, I can't quite wrap my mind around how e-mails would work. Does everyone just send group e-mails? How would one go about doing one-on-one rps with another rper?
On that same note, I keep hearing about something called NOVA, some kind of rp tool or something? What is this?
I take a lot of time on making my characters. I really hate to spend so much time on a charater only to find there are only one or two people active on the simm I just signed up for. So would it be taboo to use the same character on more than one rp? Not ones that are connected in the same fleet mind you, but completely seperate ones where my character could never run into herself.
And last but not least, the ranking system. I just can't seem to wrap my mind around how it all works. So I know there's some kind of division between officer and crewman, but I often run into a block when writing my characters due to the fact that I don't understand the difference. Are all officers looking for command/what would drive one to be an officer instead of a crewman? If someone even has a detailed webpage devoted to these different ranks I could read, I would really appreciate having someting to peruse.
