>The Prosecution will like to pose some valid questions for those who defend the accused..

like I said before, I speak on behave of the truth as I see it, and so............

1. Has Abrams version of Star Trek split the fan base as no other Trek movie has done before like   50/50 half hates it, half likes it ?

No, I'm a member here and on a number of different Trek fan sites.the split seems more 65/35 with 35 hating.

2. Could Mr. JJ Abrams USE  Star Trek to get to Star Wars ?

possible......if he knew that Lucse planned to give up the rights, which I dont think anyone predicted.

Has he not stated he's is a "Star wars fan ",

irrelevent, I'm a fan of both.He is also not the only directer of a trek film that wasnt a fan of trek at the start.

now that he's doing  Star Wars can such a person be loyal to Trek and guide the Trek franchise with loyalties divided ?

I'm a loyal fan of both, cant see why he cant be loyal to both as a creator. It not like these 2 franchises are in real danger from each other

3. What new GOOD characters or ideas has Mr. Abrams gave to Star Trek in his 2009 movie to expand the Trek universe ?

He certinly made Pike a better character.Made Uhura good at her job.

3. What Has Mr. Abrams done for the franchise other than his 2009 Trek movie ?

Trek 2013...........aand btw, What have most of trek directors done for trek outside the films they made?

your question just doesnt have a point.

1.Spock and Uhura in love

I don’t have a real hard time with this but I do think they need to end it because they are now in the same chain of command.

2.No Gary Mitchell, Kirk's friend in his early career

Kirk still isn’t “in his early career” now?

3.Not respecting the other Trek series Like TNG, DS9 and Enterprise

Word has it that Enterprise will be vindicated in STID. TNG, DS9 & VOY still exist.

4. Turning Engineering into a beer factory

Not a fan either. We need a major upgrade.

5. Creating that ugly creature to assist Scotty

No problem with Keenser

6. those irritating LENS FLARES !

Agree. Need to tone them down. Word has it they did just that in STID along with the shaky cams.

7. Horrible bridge design

I like the design, but again… the word “dim” comes to mind.

8. The foolish time travel alternate universe excuse to screw up Trek

Didn’t screw up anything. If you don’t like it you still “have your DVD’s”

9. Instead of creating or helping to create a new Star Trek series, he abandoned Trek to work on STAR WARS  ??

He has abandoned nothing. JJ’s into movies now, not TV. I think he would be too expensive for TV.

10. Instead of having the Enterprise with seasoned adults, the ship is filled with silly cadets  teens

Again, not true. Some yes because of the emergency dealt with on ST09, but should be staffed normally in STID.

11. Having the Enterprise assembled ON EARTH not in space.

Nowhere in canon was 1701 prime EVER built in space. You call yourself a trekkie?

12. turning  Chekov into an irritating little worm.

Not irritating at all. Brilliant and young. Perfect.

13. The stupid idea of making Kirk Captain too fast

Agree, but this is also dealt with in STID. Good on them for not just brushing this big deal under the rug.

14. Horrible Enterprise design

Not horrible at all. Actually, as far as shuttles go it’s better than 1701 prime.

15. No mention of the movie prequel Star Trek comic book which has TNG in it.

I think they could have included the Countdown Comic lead into the movie, but they didn’t and it wasn’t necessary to tell the story. I also think there would have been contract problems. The Kelvin opening sequence was epic. Some say the best part of the movie.

16. NO RESPECT for Star Trek CANON or CONTINUITY.

Again, not true. They bent over backwards to satisfy “trekkies”. Something that is never rewarded, makes you wonder why they do it.

The Prosecution will like to pose some valid questions for those who defend the accused…

I’ll play.

1. Has Abrams version of Star Trek split the fan base as no other Trek movie has done before like   50/50 half hates it, half likes it ?

Not true at all. Look at the overwhelming majority of positive reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. It seems the only ones that have a problem with it are the ones that would have a problem with anything other than what’s already on DVD.

2. Could Mr. JJ Abrams USE  Star Trek to get to Star Wars ? Has he not stated he's is a "Star wars fan ", now that he's doing  Star Wars can such a person be loyal to Trek and guide the Trek franchise with loyalties divided ?

One can do both. If anyone can, he can.

3. What new GOOD characters or ideas has Mr. Abrams gave to Star Trek in his 2009 movie to expand the Trek universe ?

All our original heroes are portrayed in a new but positive light. This is a movie, you can’t expect character development like you get in a TV series. STID does appear to provide some needed character development as well.

3. What Has Mr. Abrams done for the franchise other than his 2009 Trek movie ?

Reinvigorated it. Trek was dead in the water, now it’s in the headlines. I don’t know that it could have been done better.

>Yeah, even Roddenberry was beholden to studios and their money. He actually removed the lyrics from the theme song of TOS to avoid paying royalties to the artist-really progressive of him

Not exactly accurate.  Roddenberry wrote lyrics for Alexander Courage's original theme (without Courage's knowledge) for the express purpose of claiming 50% creator credit and royalties.  He never intended his lyrics to ever have been used.

The Prosecution will like to pose some valid questions for those who defend the accused..

1. Has Abrams version of Star Trek split the fan base as no other Trek movie has done before like   50/50 half hates it, half likes it ?

Um, not to my knowledge. From my personal experience it seems that about 30% hate it and 70% either love it or our indifferent. In addition, it has brought more fans in to the franchise, and helping to expand the fan base.

In addition, you would really need to dig back in to Trek history to know if it divided it like never before. Like I said, I know of TOS fans who can’t stand TNG and do not regard it as “Trek.”

2. Could Mr. JJ Abrams USE  Star Trek to get to Star Wars ? Has he not stated he's is a "Star wars fan ", now that he's doing  Star Wars can such a person be loyal to Trek and guide the Trek franchise with loyalties divided ?

Well, I’m a Star Wars fan and a Star Trek fan so I’m biased

If loyalty to Star Trek is to be called in question, the Nimoy should be the first on your list. He didn’t do anything Spock related, acting wise, for 15 years.

I think Abrams is good at balancing things, and again, he is not “in charge” of Star Wars. He is beholden to the new director of Lucas Film.

3. What new GOOD characters or ideas has Mr. Abrams gave to Star Trek in his 2009 movie to expand the Trek universe ?

He expanded on the idea that Kirk isn’t perfect, but a human being, like the rest of us.

He explored the importance of fathers in the roles of development and shaping greatness, especially in Kirk.

He made Star Trek fun again, rather than just a preachy moral story that only fans will get.

He added another timeline, similar to the Mirror Universe, that new fans can understand, step in and enjoy without having to know ALL the back story.

3. What Has Mr. Abrams done for the franchise other than his 2009 Trek movie ?

What else does he need to do? He expanded the fan base and continues to provide money so that Star Trek can be made.

The studios may be interested in money but that will always be true. Name a time when that wasn’t true?

Ah, thank you for the correction.

But, still shows the more capitalist side of Roddenberry, which was more to my point.

I hate it when these Micky Mouses play around with a series in their writing who know really nothing nor any respect for the series by monkeying around with it.  and why the hell do we need another Wrath of Khan!  ????  So now the old crew lives in this altered universe of Abrams that he has created for his first Star Trek Movie.  His tv show is much better.  Fringe.  and for the last time!  Where are The Catians!  ????  M'Ress Communications Officer and Lt. Areks the alien.  YES!  They should be in the movie or next one.  Why don't they just call this new movie of his, 'Rise of The New World Jesuit Disorder!'  and their master plan.  ????  and to much to say in this movie in relation to today with The Wrath of Khan stuff over and over again as always.  We need the aliens from The Animated Series and to actually bold go someplace to a new world. HELLO!  As in explorers again!  HELLO!  ANYBODY HOME?????  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'll write the damn thing!  PAY ME!  CALL ME!  Hey Leonard!  Call me!  Well take over!

Actually I am starting to hate the New and not improved Hollywood. Once again, the proof is made with a lot of insipid movies. And Star Trek is only one of the many disappointing examples of good effects vs bad scripts. But even in this case, the Enterprise is corny and ugly. Like Rodney used to say: there's no respect. And what is with the on and on reboots... dammit.

Because studios are scared to do anything different.

You do something different and you might loose money. Studios want a safe bet given the current economy and reboots and formulaic scripts are the only way to guarantee or at least minimize risk.

Abrams and company had their hands full and there is no way they could please everybody. So they made a movie that they would enjoy, which some describe as meaningless action but I argue has two important themes that are culturally relevant.

I think you get out of this movie what you put in to it.

Also, someone explain to me where the Jesuits come in?

I'm sure JJ and Paramount are crying in their beer because folks like the OP don't like the new direction.

Actually I'm wondering if they toned down the lenseflares this time because of the 3D or because of what fans said about the last one. I guess because of the 3D, but I'm SO glad they did!

actully, by starting this thread, and opening it for public debate, you put your ideas and yourself on trial as well as the one you accused

In addition, you have yet to provide counterarguments to your own "charges."

Here's the thing, you present arguements and defend them. If not, well its hard to take it all seriously (actually it is hard to take seriously as it is-but I'm willing it play along).

My questions are as follow-

1. Why should we question Abrams loyalty when very few directors actually stuck around with Trek, at least when came to the movies. Nimoy and Meyers are really the only two that come to mind. And Nimoy only came back to Trek because they let him direct. So, who's loyalty should we question if even one of the primary actors left, and did not intend to come back?

2. I have asserted, multiple times, that Abrams is actually engaging in social commentatry, both in 09 and now in Into Darkness. How does that fit with the critique that it isn't Star Trek because Star Trek is part social commentary?

3. The view seems to be that the original Star Trek, as well as its various incarnations, can do no wrong. Yet, Abrams is guilty of a multitude of sins simply by virtue of not being fan. Isn't it contradictory to ingnore the faults of the originals and emphasize the faults of the new movies?

>Look..Clearly when JJ Abrams made his goof ball version of Star Trek, he talk down to the loyal fans, he didn't realize that when you step on us we become  more powerful than a fleet of Borg scout ships..With his team of silly writers Orci and Kurtzman, Abrams turn TOS into a ship filled with nutty cadets and a guy with pointed ears that can be easily influenced by a human girl, YUK ! and Klingons with covered faces and trench coats, is this OUR Star Trek ?it made money, sure, but is really Star Trek ? Abrams has no repect for any Trek series or movie that came before his, is this who we want to leave Gene Roddenberry's legacy to ?? now this villian wants to move over to STAR WARS ? REALLY ?.Below is a list of the charges against this rogue, feel free to add your own, if he's found innocent, we'll (or some of us) will accept his idiotic version of Trek, If he's Guilty we won't have NOTHING to do with his Trek or Anything he's done, no DVD's no action figures.

It looks like you're speaking for all fans when you wrote this. Let me assure you, you are not.

As someone who caught TNG on its original run, who collected the toys, books and games, who has watched just about episode of Star Trek ever made, I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the 2009 reboot and the latest offering.

I'm not going to address all your 'charges'. Others have already done so. I will however take issue with your Star Wars remarks. Who cares if JJ is going to do Star Wars? You're hating his Star Trek efforts yet by accusing him of being a 'traitor' it sounds like you're keen for him to stay! And please don't tell me you buy into the 'Love Trek, hate Wars' attitude. As a fan of both franchises, I find that attitude to be beyond stupid.
