Right after they beam down (Pike's crew) to Talos 4, watch Spock as they walk around and come up on that plant that basically maskes all the background humming to ANY planet they go to. Anyway, Spock is limping. I wonder if Nimoy had some injury that day.

Actually, several of Pike's crew are either limping or not performing at their physical best. This is a reference to the fight at the fortress on Rigel 7 where three crew members died, and Pike is depressed over the loss.

Oh, I didnt think of that. OK, so why was Spock grinning from ear to ear when he touched the plant? I guess I could just chalk that up to Nimoy hadn't developed the character much at that point.

That is part of it. The other part is that Nimoy played Spock as more emotional and curious due to Pike's very serious tone. He essentially played the opposite part.


Spock was supposed to be very curious, almost child like, so the presence of plants on an otherwise barren world would likely inspire him to smile.
