I'm a long time Star Trek fan who just started watching DS9...

I think all of the Star Trek series are "different" in their own way. I think a lot of DS9's strength comes from it's solidly established background detail, in the sense that everything builds on what has come previously.

Interesting that your description was the entire premise of the first episode, which also reverberates throughout the entire series....  Good insight OtakuJo...

I would say that DS9 takes a whole new look at the way the Star Trek world exists.  It is my favorite series by far and is a much more pragmatic look at how the future might unfold as opposed to TNG.  DS9 is dark, it's focused on showing the seedy underbelly of the universe....  the politics, the religious manipulations...  certainly not the utopia that existed on the Enterprise...

I also have been re-watching DS9 and am liking it more than I did before. I especially am liking Colm Meaney who plays O"Brien in the series. He has become my favorite character of DS9. Also he desn't seem to get a lot of credit for being in 2 Star Trek series. He started out as O'Brien in Next Generation.

Good point JoCat.  OBrien is my favorite character in DS9...  the guy who just makes everything work...  and yet he's also involved in some of the most controversial epsisodes - like spending 20+years in the virtual prison, the episode with his doppelganger, the list goes on and on.  They did a great job developing his character from and un-named extra in the TNG pilot to a key figure in DS9..

Odo should have been more of a main charactor.  Also if you look at all the other "special" charactors the captains have a high respect for them, but that does not seem to be the case with Odo and Sisco.
