I'm a long time Star Trek fan who just started watching DS9...

I find it different than the other Treks. Perhaps it's more serialized? I'm not sure if that's the main reason why. ALl I know is that I've watched each TNG episode at least 4x and each TOS episode 10x. I saw every episode of Voyager and Enterprise, yet, whenever it came to DS9, I found myself watching only the episodes that had good synopsis' Usually the case of the week episodes. .That is, until recently. I've been craving for some new Star Trek in my life, and after realizing that I'll never get it with the new films, I've resorted to DS9 for my fix and I'm going to try to watch every episode.

That's the way I did it a few years ago. Now it's by far my favorite star trek -- I rarely watch the others anymore.

DS9 is better than Voyager and it feels more epic than the others. I wouldn't call it the best though. It's just better when it came to costumes, extras, sets, make up and CGI.

I think all of the Star Trek series are "different" in their own way. I think a lot of DS9's strength comes from it's solidly established background detail, in the sense that everything builds on what has come previously.

The probelm with DS9 is the characters. They aren't as fleshed out as lets say, a Spock, a Data, or a McCoy. Even the holographic doctor from Voyager was cooler than Bashir. I mean, I love DS9 for many things, the stories are very well written, and the plots have that Roddenberry touch. It's just that the characters are a bit stiff. O'Brien wasn't too interesting, Sisko lacked the charisma of Kirk and the presence of Picard. And even Worf didn't have the great character moments that he had in TNG.

Anyways, haven't seen all the episodes yet. I'm still watching them in mixed order.

If you're going to watch every DS9 episode you should just watch them in order not "mixed order". DS9 is the Star Trek show that has the most episodes that are directly related to one another, so it should be watched in order. It's also the least "casual-viewer friendly" trek show, but arguably the best Star Trek series once you get into it and understand it.

UninvitedGuest is right.

If I remember correctly, when I decided to try out Deep Space Nine about four years ago, I purposely started watching at the start of the third season (I had a vague sense that the reason I didn't take to the show as a kid was the absence of a star ship) and watched chronologically from there. That gave me an easy segue from next generation, my then-favorite, and helped me acclimate to deep space nine without sacraficing the essential chronology UnivitedGuest wrote about above.

To your point, I think the full cast doesn't become fully fleshed out and settled in until season 5 or so. Though Quark (and maybe Dukat, Jake, and Winn Adami) is (are) settled in almost from the very first episode. It's very funny, but for instance, I watched a season one episode a little bit ago that featured Dax cautioning Bashir that trills eschew romantic relationships, which is entirely at odds with the way the species was written in later seasons. So you have a point, depending on which episodes you're watching. But given time, the characterization and acting settle in very well.

I do plan on watching them in order. Right now, I'm flipping through the episodes of season 1 and 2, because they're case of the week episodes, but did see half of season 1 in order. I am starting to like Bashir after watching a few episodes today. Seems like he regrets sacrificing his love life for his career.
